———A simple Child,
That lightly draws its breath,
And feels its life in every limb,
What should it know of death?
I met a little cottage Girl:
She was eight years old, she said;
Her hair was thick with many a curl
That clustered round her head.
She had a rustic, woodland air,
And she was wildly clad:
Her eyes were fair, and very fair;

“Sisters and brothers, little Maid,
How many may you be?”
“How many? Seven in all,” she said,
And wondering looked at me.

The speaker describes how he once had a conversation with a young girl living within the country. She was just eight years old and had long, curly hair.
The appearance of the child reflected her upbringing in the countryside and she was a bit disorganized. Her eyes were beautiful and her beautiful face enthralled the speaker.
How many may you be? The speaker inquired of the girl what number of children lived in her family.
Then he asked the girl to inform him of where the children resided. The girl replied that among the seven kids, 2 were within Conway (in in the UK) while two lived in the sea.
The girl later stated that two siblings, a brother and a sister, were burials in the churchyard and that she and her mother resided in a nearby house.
Confounded The speaker asked the sweet girl to explain why there might be 7 children living in the family, if she had only two siblings living within Conway and two in the sea.
The little girl insisted that there were actually seven children within her family, as there were two lying under one of the trees in the cemetery.
The speaker replied that the girl could run around due to her being alive. If she and her two brothers were buried in the cemetery of the churchyard, there were just five kids from her household.
The child noticed that new plants sprouted from the graves of her siblings. Additionally, she was able to see and visit them, since her sister and brother were both buried together, just a few steps away from the house which she lived in with mother.
The girl later told her how she enjoyed spending time with her dead siblings, making a handkerchief and sewing her handkerchief and singing to them songs while she sat near their graves.
She continued to say the times when it got warm outside at the sunset time, she’d usually bring a small bowl into the churchyard to have her dinner by the church’s graves.
The child later told the teacher she was her sibling, Jane who died the first, had been first. Jane had been sick and lay in bed crying in pain until God lifted her from her misery , and she left.
So, Jane was buried in the churchyard. The little girl , along with John, her older brother John were able to play at her grave when the weather permitted.
One winter, as the ground was smothered in slippery white snow that a young girls could play in, John also passed away and was buried alongside Jane.
When the child was finished with their story, the teacher was asked how many siblings she has considering the fact that Jane and John went to heaven. The girl replied that she had seven siblings within her family.
The speaker declared that her sister and brother were dead, repeating that their spirits were in heaven. At the point of his speech the speaker was convinced that he had wasted his words since the child would never ever stop insisting that she had indeed seven children in her family.
