How to Reduce Points on Your Idaho Driving Record

Have you received a moving violation in Idaho? Are you a licensed Idaho resident? Do you want to reduce points and clean up your Driving record?

If so, DriveSafe Online can help!

Drivers who complete our 6-hour online Idaho Defensive Driving Course (DDC), which is approved by the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD), can reduce the number points on their Driving Record.

Fewer driving points can help keep your driving privileges intact and save you money with better insurance rates.

Idaho Point System

Moving violations are assigned a point value from 1 to 4. The more serious the violation, the more points its worth. When you receive a traffic ticket, the appropriate number of points are added to your driving record. If you accumulate too many points, your license could be suspended.

If you collect 8-11 points within a 12-month period, a warning letter is sent explaining that you are in danger of losing your driving privileges.

If you accumulate 12-17 points within that 12-month period, your license will be suspended for 30 days. If you get more than 18 points, your driving freedom could be suspended for up to 180 days.

The good news is that the ITD allows drivers to clean up their driving record and avoid jeopardizing their driving privileges. Once every three years a driver may take an approved Defensive Driving Course to reduce 3 points from the driving record.

How Does It Work?

Taking the Idaho accident prevention course is simple.

1. Register

Registration is fast and easy. Just enter your information including where you want your completion certificate to be emailed.

2. Take the course

The State of Idaho sets the 6-hour requirement for online courses. But don’t worry, we developed interesting video content, interactive scenarios, and easy to pass assessments to make the time speed by. In fact, you might actually enjoy your time in the course!

3. Receive Your Completion Certificate

Once you review all the course content and earn a 70% or better on the final test, you earn your own completion certificate.  If you like instant gratification, we have more good news for you. Your certificate is emailed directly to your inbox immediately after you successfully complete the course.

You can even enter an additional email to forward a copy of your certificate. This is the perfect time to let your insurance agent know you passed a defensive driving course so they can begin processing your insurance discount (read on to learn more about saving money).

Submit your certificate to the appropriate local authorities where you received your ticket to verify that you completed the defensive driving course. Once approved, look for the point total on your driving record to decrease.

Lower Insurance Rates

Whether or not you take a defensive driving course to satisfy a court order, you may be able to save money on car insurance.

Insurance providers often encourage their customers to take an online driver improvement program. When drivers learn to be safe drivers, they tend to have fewer accidents, which means they submit fewer claims and ultimately help save the insurance company money.

The average Idaho driver pays at least $1,000 a year for car insurance. If you complete the DriveSafe Online Idaho Defensive Driving Course, you could save up to 10% each year for three consecutive years. That’s hundreds of dollars back in your pocket just for taking an online course.

Check with your agent to find out of your insurance provider offers a defensive driver discount. And be sure to ask how much money you are eligible to save.

From Boise to Pocatello to historic Bonners Ferry… we have Idaho drivers covered.
