Social Awareness for Students – Teaching Children to Say ‘No’ to Plastics

One of the biggest menaces of this modern age is Plastic. We live in the age of ‘use and throw’. As it is easy and inexpensive to manufacture and offers versatile use, plastic is used almost everywhere. However, it is also creating a huge amount of waste. Landfills, oceans, mountains and valleys have become garbage dumps with overwhelming amounts of plastic. It is slowly damaging our eco-system and the environment around us.

Why is Plastic Harmful?

Plastic takes over 1000 years to disintegrate and decompose completely. Besides, it releases harmful chemicals, which seep into water and soil. Gradually, it is ending up in oceans and landfills, endangering several species. Animals around the world are dying due to plastic pollution, and it’s high time we do something to stop this ever-growing menace.

Say ‘No’ to Plastics

In order to protect our planet from plastic pollution, it is essential to create Social Awareness about the harmful effects of plastic. And awareness starts by informing and educating our children. It is important to teach children about the importance of saying ‘No’ to plastics.

Children must be discouraged from using plastic bags. Let them know how it can block pipes and ultimately end up in seas and oceans, eventually endangering wildlife. At the same time, it is also necessary to find alternatives to plastic bags. Let’s take a look at some ways to curb this problem.

  • Use paper bags instead of plastic ones
  • Always carry a biodegradable cloth or paper bags to the market
  • Start using nylon or jute bags regularly
  • Spread awareness among local retailers about the harmful effects of plastic
  • Encourage manufacturing of paper bags by donating old newspapers and magazines to small scale bag manufacturers

Once we start practising these eco-friendly habits at home and stop using plastic completely, children will also follow in our footsteps.

Chrysalis High schools in Bangalore regularly conduct activities that help build social awareness in children. These activities are not just one-time events that we do and forget. Our teachers motivate students to practise social awareness in every aspect of their life. We create an ideal environment to nurture and grow young minds. Here, children are not only encouraged to do well in academics but learn to become socially-responsible citizens.
