We have known about the existence of planets outside the Solar system for decades, but they are so far away that we had only been able to discover a few of them. This changed in 2009 when NASA launched the Kepler space telescope. It used a photometer to survey over 150,000 stars and measured their electromagnetic radiation, mostly in the infrared and ultraviolet wavelength.
