About:
- The scheme envisages of smoke free Rural India and aims to benefit five crore families especially the women living below poverty line (BPL) by providing concessional LPG connections to entire nation by 2019. The scheme will increase the usage of LPG and would help in reducing health disorders, air pollution and deforestation.
- With the tagline “Swachh Indhan, Behtar Jeevan”, Union Government has launched a social welfare scheme “Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana” (PMUY) on 1st May 2016.
- It is implemented by the ministry of petroleum and natural gas.
Objectives:
- To promote women empowerment
- To provide a healthy cooking fuel
- To prevent hazards health related issues among the millions of rural population due to use of fossil fuel.
Eligibility Criteria:
- The applicant should be women above the age of 18 years.
- The applicant must be a rural inhabitant carrying a BPL card.
- The women applicant should have a saving bank account in any nationalized bank across the country to receive subsidy amount.
- The applicant’s household should not already own a LPG connection.
Salient features:
- The government has extended the scope of beneficiaries; it will cover all the poor households of the country. Under this, new beneficiaries will be those among holders of both ration cards and Aadhaar, who will identify themselves as poor through self-declaration.
- LPG Connection is released in the name of adult woman of the BPL Family, subject to the condition that no LPG connection exists in the name of any family member of the household.
- Central Government will provide financial support of Rs 1600 for each LPG connection.
- Consumers will have the option to purchase gas stove and refills on EMI (zero interest), recovered through LPG subsidy received by the beneficiary. No recovery of loan is effecting for initial 6 refills.
