National Bamboo Mission – Objectives and Strategy!

About:

It is a centrally sponsored scheme with 100% contribution from central government. It is being implemented by the Horticulture division under the department of agriculture and co-operation in the ministry of agriculture.

National Bamboo Mission:

  • It envisages the integration of different ministries/departments and involvement of local people/initiative for the holistic development of Bamboo sector in terms of growth of bamboo through increase in area coverage, enhance yields, scientific management, marketing of bamboo and bamboo based handicrafts, generation of employment opportunities etc.

Objectives:

The National Bamboo Mission was implemented with the following objectives:

  1. Enhance the yields with improved and new varieties.
  2. In the potential areas, increase the coverage area for bamboo.
  3. Promotion and marketing of bamboo and handicrafts made of bamboo.
  4. Establish coordination and cooperation among stakeholders for the development of the bamboo sector.
  5. Promote, develop, and disseminate technologies through a perfect blend of modern scientific knowledge and traditional wisdom.
  6. Generate employment opportunities for skilled and unskilled labourers, especially unemployed youths.

The NBM has now been extended till 2019-20. This extended mission aims at ensuring the holistic development of the Bamboo Sector. It aims at establishing an effective linkage between the industry and the producer. Approval has been granted by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) to set up an executive committee for the enlisting the guidelines of the National Bamboo Mission, including the norms for different interventions at certain intervals according to the needs and recommendations of the states, with the Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare Ministry’s approval.

Strategy of the mission:

  • Adopt a coordinated approach covering production and marketing to assure appropriate returns to growers/producers.
  • Promote research and development of genetically superior clones of suitable species and technologies for enhanced production.
  • Enhance acreage and productivity of bamboo through species change and improved cultural practices.
  • Promote partnership, convergence and synergy among R&D and marketing agencies in public as well as private sectors, at all levels.
  • Promote where appropriate, cooperatives and self help groups to ensure support and adequate return to farmers.
  • Facilitate capacity building and human resource development
  • Set up national, state and sub-state level structures, to ensure adequate returns for the produce of the farmers and eliminate middlemen, to the extent possible.
