There are people who like to stick to the rules and think that if something is not going according to the rules then it’s wrong or incorrect. But what they forget is that language is flexible and it keeps changing. There is always something new that gets included and then there are exceptions too. So, sticking to the rules is not the only option sometimes.

So, what is it that you need to keep in mind while starting a sentence with the word ‘because’?

Now, because is a conjunction and according to the Goole dictionary, it states two meanings –

  • ‘for the reason that; since.’
  • ‘used to introduce a word or phrase that stands for a clause expressing an explanation or reason.’

Now, according to some people, due to ‘because’ being a subordinate conjunction word and its function is to join two sentences i.e it is used to join the Main Clause with a dependent clause, it is incorrect to start a sentence with Because. One thing you can do to make your sentence grammatically correct when using the word Because is by making a slight change in the sentence structure which means you have to keep the main clause in the last and also make sure to add a comma before the main clause. Let us see an example to understand the subject more clearly.

Example – Look at this sentence – ‘Lucy started reading because she wanted to learn English.’

The sentence is fine. But what if you want to start the sentence with ‘because’ then it will be –

‘Because Lucy wanted to learn English, she started reading.’

Can you see the shift in the sentence?

At first, there was a main clause and then there was the subordinate clause. But since we wanted to start with because we put the subordinate clause first and with the help of the punctuation mark, we joined the main clause to the sentence too which makes it a complete thought and grammatically correct. If you are a reader you have already realized how much such sentences are used by the authors in their novels.

The second way to start a sentence with because is in conversation especially when you are answering a question. Now the question comes how? Let us see another example –

Example – Why did she take the car? Because he allowed her.

You see while speaking you can start the sentence with the word ‘because’ and it won’t sound that much broken in fact such sentences help to understand the thing straight to the point.
