It’s April again, and Diamond is the birthstone assigned to the month of April. So I shall say, for April diamond is my favorite gemstone! haha… The popularity of Diamond is undeniably strong thanks to its undisputed hardness and special optical properties of high refractive index, dispersion, and luster.

As mentioned in our previous blog titled “Global Economic Crisis and Gemstones”, Diamond can be a great timeless asset that stores value. When it comes to collecting diamonds for private collection, there are three types of rare Fancy Color Diamonds that are worth collecting.

1. Opalescent Diamonds (Fancy White Diamonds)

These are diamonds that have that milky look. It is graded Fancy White as featured in the image above.

According to a study done by GIA, a vast majority of these diamonds belong to type 1aB, a rare subset of diamonds. These diamonds are mostly formed around 250km below the Earth’s surface! (https://www.gia.edu/gems-gemology/fall-2019-fancy-white-fancy-black-diamonds ) They are also one of the oldest diamonds ever known to mankind, which is up to 1.4 billion years old!

2. Chameleon Diamonds

Chameleon diamonds are colour changing diamonds. In normal conditions, they are typically greenish in colour. When it’s left in the darkness or heated they would turn yellow, and typically takes around 20 seconds to return to its normal state.

The colour of this diamond is categorized into 3 components: Hue (type of colour), Tone (lightness and darkness of colour) and Saturation (intensity of the colour). Colour modifiers for Pink diamond are brown, orange, purple and gray.

The color intensity of a pink diamond affects the value tremendously. The color intensity and tone goes from:

  1. Faint
  2. Very Light
  3. Light
  4. Fancy Light
  5. Fancy | Fancy Intense | Fancy Vivid
  6. Fancy Dark | Fancy Deep

Pink Diamonds, graded with Fancy Vivid and Fancy Deep, are valued the highest in price.
