Health benefits of tomatoes



Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) is a fruit. Which belongs to the nightshade family. Tomatoes are native to South America.
It is botanically a fruit, however it is eaten and prepared like a vegetable.
You can find tomatoes in various colors, including yellow, green, orange, and purple. Tomatoes are also found in many shapes and sizes. So each tomato has a distinct flavor profile. 
Nutritional facts of Tomatoes:
Tomatoes are nutrient-dense plant food. It is not an unknown fact that consuming plant-based products is beneficial for healthy living, and tomatoes are no different.
Total calories in a  Tomato is 18. Water content of tomatoes is 95%, protein is about 0.9 grams, Carbs about 3.9 grams, Sugar about 2.6 grams, Fiber in Tomatoes is about 1.2 grams and Fat 0.2 grams.
So Tomatoes are low in Calories, but they are very important when it comes to providing important nutrients like Vitamin C and potassium. They are high in fiber and offer many healthy anti-oxidants. 
They are rich source of Calcium, Vitamin C, potassium, Folate, Vitamin K and Beta-carotene. 
Tomatoes fulfill 28% of Bit C’s daily Reference intake. They contain Vitamin K which has role in blood clotting, Vitamin B9 (Folate) which is required for cell activities and healthy tissues and potassium which prevents heart diseases and controls blood pressure.

Tomatoes for skin health:
Tomatoes are really great for your skin. Tomatoes are consumed raw in the form of salads for keeping your skin healthy and radiant. It is because Tomatoes contain lycopene which protects it from harmful effects of sun damage. Tomatoes also contain Vitamin A, which promotes skin health. 
Tomatoes are applied on skin in the form of tomato juice and other face mask to treat acne and hyperpigmentation. Tomatoes are very effective in fading away acne scars and marks. 
Bone health:
Tomatoes are very important for keeping your bones and bone tissues healthy and to strengthen them. It is found that Tomatoes contain Vitamin K and Calcium which has a role in strengthening bones. 
Prevents Cancer:
Tomatoes lowers the risk of prostate, Colon and colorectal cancer. It also prevents tumor development in prostate cancer. It is because Tomatoes are rich in lycopene (an anti-oxidant) which helps to prevent prostate cancer. 
Consuming “High fiber fruits and vegetables” also lower the risk of colorectal cancer.  Some studies suggests that Tomatoes contain Beta-carotene and in this way they lower the risk of development of colorectal cancer. 
“The famous pizza study of 2002 gave a lot of attention to Lycopene,” says Bowden “Researchers found that men who ate pizza twice or more a week reduced their risk for prostate cancer by 23%,a fact that didn’t go unnoticed in dormitories everywhere. The scientists believe the effect came from the lycopene in the tomato sauce. 
Blood pressure management:
Tomatoes are rich in potassium. Which is responsible for maintaining a healthy blood pressure. It is because potassium rich diets help in elimination of excess sodium from the body through the kidney. In addition it help in relieving tension from the blood vessels wall. 
Lowers Heart Disease Risk:
Any fruit that is high in Potassium such as tomatoes are excellent to manage and sustain healthy heart functioning. It is because potassium prevents vascular Calcification (accumulation of Calcium in smooth muscles cell located within arteries) 
Homocysteine ( an amino acid) leads to a higher risk of heart attacks and strokes. The folate in tomatoes helps in keeping Homocysteine levels balanced. 
Diabetes control:
Tomatoes are an excellent choice for diabetic patients because they have a GI less than 15, making them a low GI food and an excellent choice for diabetes. 
Tomatoes are rich in fiber (about 9 grams) and high fiber diets have been found to lower blood glucose levels in people with type 1 diabetes. At the same time low lipids, insulin and blood sugar levels are experienced in people with type 2 diabetes when they consume high fiber diet. 
Tomatoes also lower risk of Cardiovascular diseases in individuals with type 2 diabetes. 
Prevents constipation:
Tomatoes are high in water content and fiber therefore they promote regular bowel movements. It is because insoluble fibers are not mixed with other foods and add bulk to the Stool. That is why Tomatoes are termed as a laxative fruit. 
Improves Vision:
Eating Tomatoes are helpful in improving your vision. It is because they are rich in Vitamin A which is needed by our retina. They also contain lycopene which protects the eye from the damage of free radicals. Tomatoes contain copper which is responsible for production of Melanin (an essential Eye pigment) and Vitamin C which prevents age-related cataracts
