Meet Durga Nair: A Learning Enthusiast, Mentor, and a Go-getter

My students continue to inspire me, and I strive to be the best for them because they deserve the best!

You know, I still receive greetings from my old batches and they tell me how they were glued to studying Maths because of the way I taught. My students are all doing great in their careers now. What more could you ask? Isn’t it a gift? Seeing your students grow in their professional life gives you a feeling of contentment which you can’t get anywhere else. And, as a Teacher, there is never a dull moment in my life, I am constantly growing, exploring and doing something new with my students!

Elementary school is where it all began. I started my career as a nursery teacher, surrounded by lovely cute kids. Being a nursery teacher gives you a good exposure to understand a lot of a child’s way of grasping and Learning. And, I learned to develop an unbreakable bond with my students. I had a great time during that period and bolstered my courage to climb the next ladder. However, the next stage of my journey was not ducked soup as I faced a lot of challenges. When I was a middle compartment educator, I dealt with a lot of discrimination. My colleagues weren’t very happy with my success. You know, there were times amidst all the harassment and discrimination, I wanted to give up but I didn’t! When I thought about quitting one night, I kept picturing my students, and decided to push myself against these challenges and fight back. While the situations around didn’t change very much, I moved forward and continued my journey to be a part of higher education. Soon,  I joined a new institution as head of the department. Challenges did follow me again but around this time I knew how to deal with them and focused more on polishing my teaching skills. As I headed out for my run to my new role, I realized something. The reason I am here today is because of my students. They have never failed to inspire me to do something good for the community. My students today know me as someone who is constantly on the go, and they know that because they are on the go with me. It’s a nice feeling!

In life, I have borrowed many inspirations from many schools and college teachers, but the best inspiration I ever borrowed was from my Social Science teacher – Ms. Maria Shanthi. Her guidance and motivations have transformed me and made me what I am today.

When I am not working, you will find me with a pen and paper writing quotes or working on a blog to inspire the entire student community. I want to see my students working towards making this world a better place to be in with bright futures, which is why I spend most of my time learning about new strategies to simplify the teaching-learning mechanism. I think we, as Educators, must have a keen learning strategy and should be aware of all the technological aids, by which we could fulfill the needs of the young minds.

I strongly believe that a child’s future is shaped both by his/her parents and teachers. As parents, it’s important to have regular interaction with your child, even if you’re packed with meetings and office work.  Do listen to their queries and try to give the right solutions. As teachers, we can spend only few hours with your kids, so you should continue motivating them beyond the school hours. Support them in their failures as well.

I often tell my students “Life is not about winning the pathway, it matters on chasing the failures successfully”.
