ICC World Cup 2023; The 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup is the 13th edition of the Cricket World Cup, a quadrangular One Day International (ODI) cricket tournament played by men’s national teams and organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The tournament is being hosted by India, it started on 5 October and is scheduled to end on 19 November 2023.

ICC World Cup 2023

Ten national teams are participating which are Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka. Netherlands and Sri Lanka qualified by playing a qualifier tournament held in Zimbabwe earlier this year. The path to the tournament for teams involved navigating the rigorous 2023 Cricket World Cup qualification process. Notably, the West Indies, a team with an illustrious history, faced an unexpected setback as they failed to secure a spot for the first time in their cricketing history. England are the defending champions, having won the 2019 edition by defeating New Zealand in the final at Lord’s, London.  CLICK HERE

This is the first Men’s Cricket World Cup to be hosted entirely by India. He co-hosted the 1987, 1996 and 2011 editions with other neighboring countries. The event unfolds across ten diverse stadiums in ten distinct cities spread throughout India. The first and second semi-finals will be held at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and Eden Gardens in Kolkata respectively, while the final will be held at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

ICC World Cup 2023 Background

Initially, the tournament was slated to run from February 9th to March 26th, 2023., it was announced that the tournament would be moved to October and November as a result of the qualification program being disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On June 27, 2023, the ICC unveiled the tournament schedule..

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had threatened to boycott the competition after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refused to send a team for the 2023 Asia Cup to be held in Pakistan. In June 2023, the Asian Cricket Council resolved the issue by announcing the adoption of a hybrid model proposed by the PCB. Under this arrangement, nine out of the competition’s 13 matches would be held in Sri Lanka.

ICC World Cup 2023 Qualification

Like the last World Cup, 10 teams will participate in this tournament also. However, the main route to qualification was through the new ICC Cricket World Cup Super League, a series of matches to be played between 2020 and 2023, rather than through the ODI Championship. The top eight of the 13 teams in the Super League automatically qualified for the World Cup, although hosts India, who finished fourth, were guaranteed a spot. In June and July 2023, the bottom five teams of the Super League and the top five ranked Associate teams competed for the remaining two spots in the 2023 Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

As a result of the qualifying process, this is the first competition not to include former winners West Indies, who failed to progress beyond the qualifying process after their defeat to Scotland. Full members Ireland and Zimbabwe also missed qualification, meaning that three of the four full members participating in the knock-out qualification stage did not qualify, with only Sri Lanka progressing. The final qualification place fell in an eliminator between associate members, Scotland and the Netherlands. The Netherlands won the eliminator and finished last in the final stage of the competition.

The International Cricket Council announced that the winner’s trophy would tour the world 100 days before the start of the event. Trophy photographs were taken at each location.

Ahead of the tournament, it was reported that the opening ceremony would take place on 4 October 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, a day before the opening match at the same venue. Organizers canceled the opening ceremony, and instead held a press conference attended by the captains of the ten teams.

The ICC officially announced the World Cup mascot on 19 August; Following the announcement, an event was held in Gurgaon with two U-19 World Cup-winning captains, Shafali Verma and Yash Dhull. The mascots are a male and female pair named “Tonk” and “Blaze” respectively, from a fictional cricket utopia called “Crictoverse”. They embody the principle of gender equality.

The official theme song of the 2023 Cricket World Cup, “Dil Jashn Bole” (Translation: The heart says celebrate) was released on 20 September. The song was composed by Pritam while the lyrics were written by Shlok Lal and Saveri Verma. This song was composed by Pritam, Nakash Aziz, Shriram Chandra, Amit Mishra, Jonita Gandhi, Akasa Singh and S. Sung by P. Charan. The accompanying music video featured actor Ranveer Singh, several Indian Instagram reels creators and YouTubers. However, the song faced criticism and poor reviews.

The Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium received a new grass surface, drainage system, seating areas and hospitality boxes. The outfield, floodlights, corporate box and toilets were upgraded at the Wankhede Stadium. MA. New flood lights were installed at Chidambaram Stadium and two wickets were re-installed.

With this World Cup’s autumn schedule, the ICC established protocols to minimize the impact of moisture, including dew and rain, on pitch conditions so that they do not give an advantage to the team batting second (as in the 2021 men’s (T20 World Cup). These include using a specific wetting agent and setting a minimum boundary of 70 meters (77 yards) with more grass on the pitch to encourage seam bowling than spin bowling.
