ICC World Cup 2023
Ten national teams are participating which are Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka. Netherlands and Sri Lanka qualified by playing a qualifier tournament held in Zimbabwe earlier this year. The path to the tournament for teams involved navigating the rigorous 2023 Cricket World Cup qualification process. Notably, the West Indies, a team with an illustrious history, faced an unexpected setback as they failed to secure a spot for the first time in their cricketing history. England are the defending champions, having won the 2019 edition by defeating New Zealand in the final at Lord’s, London. CLICK HERE
This is the first Men’s Cricket World Cup to be hosted entirely by India. He co-hosted the 1987, 1996 and 2011 editions with other neighboring countries. The event unfolds across ten diverse stadiums in ten distinct cities spread throughout India. The first and second semi-finals will be held at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and Eden Gardens in Kolkata respectively, while the final will be held at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
ICC World Cup 2023 Background
Initially, the tournament was slated to run from February 9th to March 26th, 2023., it was announced that the tournament would be moved to October and November as a result of the qualification program being disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On June 27, 2023, the ICC unveiled the tournament schedule..
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had threatened to boycott the competition after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refused to send a team for the 2023 Asia Cup to be held in Pakistan. In June 2023, the Asian Cricket Council resolved the issue by announcing the adoption of a hybrid model proposed by the PCB. Under this arrangement, nine out of the competition’s 13 matches would be held in Sri Lanka.
ICC World Cup 2023 Qualification
Like the last World Cup, 10 teams will participate in this tournament also. However, the main route to qualification was through the new ICC Cricket World Cup Super League, a series of matches to be played between 2020 and 2023, rather than through the ODI Championship. The top eight of the 13 teams in the Super League automatically qualified for the World Cup, although hosts India, who finished fourth, were guaranteed a spot. In June and July 2023, the bottom five teams of the Super League and the top five ranked Associate teams competed for the remaining two spots in the 2023 Cricket World Cup Qualifier.
As a result of the qualifying process, this is the first competition not to include former winners West Indies, who failed to progress beyond the qualifying process after their defeat to Scotland. Full members Ireland and Zimbabwe also missed qualification, meaning that three of the four full members participating in the knock-out qualification stage did not qualify, with only Sri Lanka progressing. The final qualification place fell in an eliminator between associate members, Scotland and the Netherlands. The Netherlands won the eliminator and finished last in the final stage of the competition.
