20 Staycation Ideas for Spending Your Spring Break in Athens


Are you planning on staying in town for Ohio University’s spring break? This year’s week off for students falls from March 12 to March 16, so now’s the time to start filling up your calendar with all the fun activities Athens has to offer!

We’ve put together a guide of 20 things to do and places to go during your staycation in Athens, both on and off campus. Give it a look!

Outdoor Recreation

Spring has arrived! Depending on the weather in Athens, this could be a perfect time to explore the area’s various outdoor attractions. From fishing to camping and so much more, there are many possibilities outside for getting some fresh air and having fun!

  1. Wistendahl Native Plant Garden – Opened in 2014, this garden was created to highlight and preserve the natural plants, shrubs and other greenery in Athens. It was brought to life by the Wistendahl family, the Athens Garden Club, and local volunteers.
  1. Hocking Hills – Stay in a cabin overnight or spend an afternoon in Hocking Hills, a popular destination that’s a short road trip from Athens. While there, you can rent canoes, ride ziplines, and more.
  1. Old Man’s Cave – The most popular visiting point of Hocking Hills is Old Man’s Cave. Rain, snow or shine, this gorge is a connecting point for multiple trails and provides picturesque hiking opportunities.
  1. Sells Park – An alternative to driving to Hocking Hills is visiting nearby Sells Park, a small nature area within Athens that features a small pond and hiking trails.
  1. East State Street Park – You’ll find slides, jungle gyms, and monkey bars at this dog-friendly park that’s located close to the Athens Community Center.
  1. Dairy Lane – This park is also in Athens near the Kennedy Museum of Art and features an 18-hole miniature golf course, along with a shelter house that can be reserved for events.
  1. Athens Skate Park – This award-winning park covers 18,000 square feet and features attractions for skaters of all levels such as bowls, steps and ledges.
  1. Hockhocking Adena Bikeway – Bike riders come from all over Ohio to take a ride on this 21-mile trail. “Hockhocking” means “bottleneck” or “twisted,” which fits with the trail’s winding path.
  1. Earth Water Rock: Outdoor Adventures – Another way to take in Hocking Hills’ scenic views is to climb the cliffs. Earth Water Rock allows you to rock climb and will even teach you how to belay safely.
  1. Smoke Rise Ranch Resort – This resort is just a half an hour from Athens and offers horseback riding for guests on guided trails, cattle drive routes and more, all on 2,000 acres of land.

Indoor Activities

  1. Bird Arena – On Ohio University’s campus you’ll find Bird Arena, an indoor ice facility that offers open skates, classes, recreational hockey and more.
  1. Rollerbowl Lanes – People of all ages can come to Rollerbowl Lanes, which features 16 bowling lanes along with options for birthday parties and pool tournaments.
  1. Athena Cinema – This cinema is a staple of Athens, having been in business since 1915. Expect to find showings for independent and international films, along with various events and timely screenings.
  1. Athens Yoga – Put an emphasis on your health and wellbeing by signing up for a yoga class or massage at Athens Yoga, located on East State Street.
  1. Beads & Things – Express your creativity at this art store, where you can make jewelry, embellish textiles and more.
  1. Putnam & Speedwell – Spend an afternoon antiquing at this store named after early settler Rufus Putnam. Some items you may be able to find here include books, kitchenware and pottery.
  1. Stuart’s Opera House – Filled with history, this theatre has a lot to offer. From plays to concerts to happy hour, there’s something here that everyone will love.
  1. Dairy Barn Arts Center – The Dairy Barn Arts Center features various exhibitions in its 6,500-square foot gallery. The center has a full event calendar filled with showcases, workshops and more.
  1. Kennedy Museum of Art – Looking for an on-campus activity to do? Visit this museum to marvel at various collections, such as Native American textiles and jewelry.
  1. Banana Road– Once a record store, this local business has evolved into a poster retailer with global reach. Browse the store to find posters of movies, musicians, athletes and more.
