Morphology Coding in ICD-10-AM
1. In coding neoplasms it refers to the form and structure of the neoplastic cells, or the histopathology of the cells.
2. It is the tissue in which it originates (epithelial, connective, glandular, nervous etc.) that determines the properties of a particular neoplasm
3. ICD-0 3rd Edition is used
4. The morphology of secondary neoplasms is the same as the morphology of the malignant cells at the primary site.
5. The morphology code consists of a prefix and five digits.

The first four digits, 8140, identify the adenocarcinoma as the particular type of cancer (its histology). The one-digit behaviour code indicates
/0 Benign
/1 Uncertain whether benign or malignant
/2 Carcinoma in situ
/3 Malignant, primary site
/6 Malignant, metastatic site
/9 Malignant, uncertain whether primary or metastatic site
8. if the diagnostic statement does not specify that a malignant neoplasm is either a primary or secondary site, you should presume that it is a primary site
9. When you are listing morphology codes remember that the rule about double coding in ACS 0025 applies. You list a morphology code once only.
10. If the term 'cancer' is preceded by a term other than a morphological descriptor, assign the morphology code M8000/3 Neoplasm, malignant. Therefore, if prostate Ca is documented without any available histology report or clinical clarification, assign M8000/3 Neoplasm, malignant.
