Punjabi University: Disseminating Quality Care Knowledge from People who Care

Punjabi University: Disseminating Quality Care Knowledge from People who CareInternational schools have been developed in a new, integrated world for decades now and are increasing in popularity, especially among local communities, as they provide easier access to higher education opportunities across the world. As a result, the number of children completing academics in languages other than their mother tongue is increasing exponentially.

However, research suggests that providing a healthy mother tongue base, contributes to a much stronger comprehension of the program as well as a more optimistic outlook towards education, and it is important for children to retain their first language as they begin schooling in a new language.

Punjabi University recognizes this importance and aims towards the advancement of Punjabi studies and development of Punjabi language as a medium of instruction or otherwise, for providing instruction in humanistic and scientific subjects and generally for the promotion of education and research.

Punjabi University is a State University in Patiala, Punjab, India. It was created under Act No. 35 of the Punjab Act of 1961 and was established on 30th April 1962. It is the world’s second institution named after a language, the first being Israel’s Hebrew Institution. It is a certified university with NAAC “A” grade, with a lush green and more than 800 acres of pollution free campus.

The Leading Light

The key personality of the university is Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. B.S. Ghuman, who is a visionary leader in education, with a post graduate degree in Economics. He has an M.Phil. and a Ph.D. in the same field and has considerable foreign experience as an Associate Professor at the Department of Economics at the University of Fraser Valley, British Columbia, Canada. He is also a profound propagator of the Physiotherapy discipline.

The Department of Physiotherapy

The Department of Physiotherapy was founded in 2001 by the Department of Sports Sciences, Punjabi University, Patiala, and has been autonomous since 2008. There are currently three courses in the School, namely Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT), Master of Physiotherapy (MPT), and Ph.D. of Physiotherapy.

Bachelor in Physiotherapy (BPT) is a four-year undergraduate degree with a six-month mandatory rotational internship, a Master in Physiotherapy (MPT), a postgraduate degree with specializations in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, Neurological Diseases, Physical injury recovery, and cardiopulmonary recovery.

Together with its scientific and therapeutic performance, the Department of Physiotherapy is one of the largest organizations in the field of research. This is the highest-funded department of various government funding agencies and authorities such as DST-FIST, DST-SERB, and RUSA AND UGC. The department is part of a nationally and internationally renowned organization.

Beyond the Four Walls

Apart from normal classroom instruction, this institute has several other instructional communication forms, such as seminars, community meetings, and individual interviews, which are very popular. In addition to that, the Journal Groups, Case Discussions, and Seminars enable students to learn the topic easily and deeply. Additionally, a good student-teacher partnership offers a relaxed environment where students can challenge their questions without being reluctant.

The departmental functioning offers interdisciplinary courses, lectures, and conferences during the year that enable students to refresh their expertise and hear about current innovations in their area and throughout their field. The department organizes national conferences, two multi-disciplinary workshops, and four CMEs yearly, which involve participants from the global forum. All students are invited to take part in all these activities and to present research papers and posters that make them more excited to learn about new findings and to try interesting topics in their subject.

Furthermore, technological developments in modern modalities enable recovery approaches that are, in effect, helpful to society. Such devices minimize recovery time and enable the physiotherapist to handle more patients on a regular basis. Students are introduced to these technological advances by visiting and conducting special sessions at the conferences of various new companies, in which they describe how new modalities or new advances in machines are useful for the treatment of the patient. The Department makes heavy use of the Mini Cox scale for the measurement of different situations.

A Plethora of Opportunities

The Institute has its own placement group, which runs around the clock to offer first job options for students who complete their degree. The Department offers support for placement in schools, universities upon graduation, and master’s degrees. Students at Punjabi University procure a high degree of industrial experience that lets them grow a clinical information base that, in effect, let them gain trust and expertise in them.

Future Roadmap

For forthcoming years, the Department has an ambitious roadmap for the future, with the first to be partnered with U.S. Universities to offer a Physiotherapy Doctoral Program. It is working towards the largest multidisciplinary physiotherapy hospital to be equipped with residential and non-residential patient care facilities and to be financed by the government.

In addition, the Department is sponsored by DST-FIST in 2019 for the next five years to improve the facilities by building a digital lab and renovating existing research laboratories. With respect to the syllabus, the Department has a committee that is actively working on rendering this syllabus a multi-disciplinary syllabus such that, in the coming period, students will properly comprehend alternate methodologies in this degree.
