Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women: Cultivating Beginners’ Minds for the Technical World

A Country’s progress is incomplete if the Women are not empowered. Education is the first step towards it which makes women self-reliant and contribute towards the society. In May 2013, Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTUW) was established and is now a completely self-reliant technical University exclusively for Women having more than 2700 students on its Kashmere Gate Campus situated in the heart of Delhi.

IGDTUW has been empowered to function efficiently as a teaching and research centre in various branches of engineering, applied sciences, architecture and management courses, promoting advancement and dissemination of knowledge and learning among women of the country and to meet the requirement of technically skilled women workforce.

The objective of the University is to foster industry-relevant research and innovations and empower the women of our country through value-based higher education making them employable, self-reliant, and responsible citizens of the country with concern for environment and society.

Infrastructure and Academic Programs

IGDTUW has a state-of-the-art infrastructure comprising of modern well-equipped Labs, fully Wi-Fi enabled campus, Computer Centre, fully Automated Library, Auditorium, Multi-purpose Hall, Conference Room, Seminar Room, Hostels, Sports Facilities, etc. The classrooms are equipped with complete ICT infrastructure. Faculty are encouraged to use Interactive boards, multimedia projectors, digital podium, LCD panel, LCD digital display, and professional interactive touch display.

IGDTUW has worked hard to build a strong academic curriculum with a rich diversity of courses and is working towards new academic initiatives. Academic innovations have always been topmost in the priorities of the University.

With globalization, today’s graduates need to be flexible, to be able to learn quickly and to be able to innovate to produce products and services that can cater to local needs and global standards. The institute has designed the B. Tech. curriculum from the ground up to produce technology-savvy leaders and designers for future India.

The curriculum has a broad base of courses in Architecture, Engineering, Management, and Humanities. The syllabi are continuously updated and new courses are added from time to time. Academic Council and the Boards of Studies have representations from industry in addition to academicians from top academic institutions. It offers B.Tech. in Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE),Mechanical & Automation Engineering (MAE), and Information Technology (IT). It also offers M.Tech-CSE (Artificial Intelligence), M.Tech. (Robotics & Automation), M.Tech-ECE (VLSI), M.Tech (Information Security Management) and MCA. An Experienced Leader

The key personality behind the success of the University is Dr. (Mrs.) Amita Dev. She is the first Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Second Vice-Chancellor of IGDTUW. With over three decades of experience in Teaching, Research, and Industry, she has an excellent record of accomplishment of administration, teaching, innovation, and research. She has many accomplishments to her credits; State Level Best Teacher Award, National Level Best Teacher Award, AICTE Young Teacher Career Award, Vittiya Saksharta Abhiyan Award, etc.

Under her mentorship, the University has earned the Notable Mention Award from AICTE and received a whopping grant of Rs.363 lakhs from the Department of Science & Technology for consolidation of University Research and Excellence. Under her dynamic leadership, IGDTUW participated in the World’s Universities with Real Impact (WURI) Ranking and bagged the 21st rank in the special category “Entrepreneurship spirit” of WURI Ranking, 2020. IGDTUW has also been ranked 77th position in the overall “WURI: Innovative Universities for 2020”. Recently, the university has been conferred the award of E-LEAD institute for E-learning Excellence for Academic Digitization by QS I QUAGE. The faculty members of the university have obtained various Innovative Research Projects from leading research Institutions and Organizations including – Microsoft, DST, MIETY, DIETY, MHRD, etc. and are working on prestigious sponsored research projects with a grant of approximately Rs.6.5 crores.

Transforming students into Leaders through Meticulous Programs

Apart from the regular academic programs, the University has adopted a Choice Based Credits System CBCS with the option to choose tracks for interests for women students with multiple exit options. These tracks include- Project Track, Entrepreneurial Track, Research Track, MOOC track.

The syllabus of the programs is the latest and as per the industry requirement. Very innovative projects like women and society, business entrepreneurship, and others under the generic open elective category are added in the curriculum to give the students a variety of subjects to select for their overall and holistic development.

Students are highly involved in Community Outreach Programs including Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, Electoral campaigns, and others. University is closely working with government schools to promote STEM education among young girl students. A unique program of Vigyan Jyoti under the department of Science and Technology goal is executed to create gender–enabling S&T ecosystems and to inculcate scientific temperaments among school girls.

Students also take part in various curricular and extra-curricular activities and competitions within the university and outside. On several occasions, they represented the university and won prizes and medals to bring laurel to the university. The University students are encouraged to participate in various National and International events, competitions including Hackathons and won various Awards / Prizes. The University has seven Technical membership societies like ACM chapter, IEEE, OSA, etc., fourteen institute level societies and four clubs related to various Technical, Art and Culture and Environment activities.

For industry exposure, the University has signed several MoUs with leading industries including IBM, CISCO, NASSCOM Foundation, EATON, and several others so that students can get advantages of the latest trends and techniques adopted by the industry. Through these MoUs and linkage, students become better industry-ready professionals before the completion of their programs.

Also, University has received financial and mentorship support from International organizations like GiZ, Germany, Nexus, the USA to promote innovation, entrepreneurial culture among girl students. Workshops, boot camps, seminars, pitching sessions are conducted regularly for converting the emphasis from job seekers to job providers.

Supporting Entrepreneurial Minds

IGDTUW promotes an entrepreneurial culture and an ecosystem among women. It has established an Incubation Centre – ANVESHAN where girl students are encouraged to start their entrepreneurial journey by providing them seed amount up to Rs. 10 Lacs along with mentoring and other infrastructural support. Several students are working on their ideas formulation and implementation along with their regular studies. Currently, 11 startups are working in the incubation centre and are doing good progress. Recently, Ms Shubhi Khanna, CSE-2nd year student was selected as a panellist on QS I∙GAUGE’s ReThink Tank session on “Women Entrepreneurship through the lens of Higher Education” with the Honorable Minister for Women & Child Development, Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani held on 13th June, 2020.

All kinds of facilitation in four phases of complete incubation and venture development cycle i.e. i) Pre-incubation, ii) Incubation, iii) Acceleration, and iv) Post-incubation are provided. It is funded by the Directorate of Training and Technical Education (DTTE), Government of NCT of Delhi, and also recognized by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India as Technical Business Incubator (TBI).

The University has also signed several MoU with leading industries including NASSCOM Foundation, IBM, Cyberpeace Foundation, Fluor Daniel, and several others for technology upgradation of students. It has also received a research grant and project grant from various Government agencies. Under this MoU, NASSCOM Foundation has established a complete ‘IoT and Robotics Lab’ (worth INR 60 Lakhs) named ‘thingQbator’ from the CSR fund received from CISCO. Defy is the technical partner in this CSR Project. The main aim of this MoU is to facilitate free heuristic technical training to the students of IGDTUW. After the intensive training students prepare prototype and live projects. Up till now a total of three cohorts have been completed where fifty-one projects have been delivered successfully by more than 200 girl students.

The Career Trajectory

The University has an excellent placement record due to the growing demand for women professionals in the country. The placements of the students are excellent with top recruiters visiting the campus like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Adobe, Goldman Sachs, Directi, Cisco, VISA, Intuit, Expedia, Hero Moto, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Power, etc. and many more. In 2019-20, more than 90 companies have visited the campus and the highest package of Rs.43.3 lakhs has been offered to the students.

The Training and Placement Department facilitates the Campus Drives and offers placement and internship utopia for the students. Retaining and revitalizing the past glory, the highly energetic and dynamic team of students and faculty of the University have given students an incredibly great platform to prove their skills and merit.

The University is honoured to have corporate giants like Google, Microsoft, Uber, Intuit, Goldman Sachs, American Express, Walmart, Netapp, Cisco, GE, Nestle, Siemens, Accenture, TCS, DELL, Qualcomm, Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti, Honda, Bajaj Automobile, MG Motor, Tata Motors, Nestle, Eaton, HUL, Ather Energy, Siemens, Honeywell, Cameron, Fluor Daniel, and others, visiting it annually and offering great opportunities to its students. For the first time, Google made its presence on the campus and specially organized the “Kickstart” Roadshow especially for IGDTUW students.

Collaborations for Progress

IGDTUW is currently partnering with various universities to promote various forms of academic Collaboration with Institutions and Industries for improvement in the performance of the students. This also helps in knowledge updation of faculty, bridging the gap between Academia & Industry, better placements of students, and higher studies opportunities for students.

IGDTUW has been selected by the Department of Science and Technology, for building Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence. It has also collaborated with NASSCOM & CISCO for setting-up of thingQbator Innovation lab.

It has collaborated with National Ping Tung University [NPTU], Taiwan for Research Collaboration, Student and Faculty Exchange, and with Maykop State Technological University, Maykop Russia for Collaborative Research, exchange of Faculty, Students, Researchers, etc and jointly organizing Symposia, Seminars and Conferences. It is associated with EATON Foundation for internship placement and scholarships to the students etc. And has an MoU with NEXUS Incubation Hub, American Centre for Incubation, and Skill Development.

The university’s alumni body is a vast and thriving community of technocrats, senior executives, successful entrepreneurs, and leaders of society. Internships with government bodies and various MNCs are encouraged for more holistic learning. An exhaustive list of Alumni is silently and honestly working at National and MNCs throughout the world, bringing laurels to the University.

IGDTUW alumni are working with many prestigious companies like Facebook, Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco, SAP Labs, Oracle, Qualcomm, Mahindra & Mahindra, General Motors, Cognizant, Aricent, Tata Consultancy Services, Yamaha Motors, Hindustan Unilever, IBM India, and many more. About 6% of students from the graduating batch 2016-20 are going for higher studies to Universities in India and overseas universities.
