Are you sure about PhD degree?

Completing a PhD is not an easy task. The road to PhD is difficult and might take too many efforts. If you wish to pursue a career in science, a PhD is not always necessary. There are many possible ways to get into the industry without a doctorate degree. PhD can be a very useful qualification which gives high skills and adds importance to your CV but at the same time can take up too much time and efforts. By the time you finish your PhD, many essentials such as organisation skills, time management, workloads, attention to details, writing skills and presenting to an audience are something which a PhD Student will learn over the course of time.

Choose the Right Project and Supervisor

The project plays a very important role. Not only does it help in keeping engaged with the project but also enhances the ability to sell yourself in an interview. If you show passion and good enthusiasm about your undergoing project and science, you will always be a step ahead compared to other candidates. You need to be the best out of masses and an exceptional candidate.

Not only the project plays a major role but a passionate and worthy supervisor puts invaluable information and support to the overall project. Before considering any potential supervisor make it a point to get all the mentioned points below cleared:

Does the supervisor have a good track record of paper publishing?

What is the community of scientists you work in a lab be like?

Are there experience post-doctorate scientist working in Lab?

Who will be your advisor?

Any expert supervisor in the field you are interested in?

Is the project or work undertaken ground-breaking and right to your niche?

Treat it like a Job

During the academic time, it is likely that you will define your own schedule. A PhD degree offers many perks of student lifestyle. Every day is a part of the struggle with time spent in the library and reading of books, there is no room for cramping during a PhD.

You will have to write a literature review for the first three months after its well done at the end of the year; you will have to write the report, which gives proof that you are capable to write everything. All theoretical work does not leave much time for lab work, which means time management is a very important part.  Having good and proper time management is an important part of PhD and needs to be treated as Job.

Be organised

Take an hour to spend time coming up with a list of long-term and short-term goals. It is good to have a timeline of what needs to be done when. Read a few papers, start writing the thesis, collecting data to figure out things well before time. The good use of time, it is much easier to end PhD in the long run.

Balance

Always maintain a good balance between your PhD degree and social life. It is always good to have amazing friends from different parts of the world. A science institute has many bright students from different countries and provides experience with a range of people and cultures. Do not just stick to people in college and lab, go to a different event where you will meet other postgraduate students.

Maintain hobbies and keep up with friends outside PhD. People will meet and become a friend and might be able to help you out and offer good shoulder during good and bad times.

Practical advice

Make sure all your data is backed up and kept safe. Keep all your work saved on a shared drive which can be accessed anywhere and anytime. Every data saved on the internet or physical hard drive needs to have a backup. Take care of the thesis and do not carry it anywhere. Make sure things are kept safe.

Getting PhD is all about Independent Research Study

Many students do not realize the importance of a PhD thesis. A PhD program is an extension of your undergraduate course. Concentrate on your area of expertise by developing an original study with a goal of publishing it in a school journal. The topic being focused need to have a clear vision.

As you are on your PhD journey, the supervisor will ask about the potential fields of the research study. Make sure you have researched about your topic well enough to get good and positive inputs from a supervisor.
