The 2nd Roundtable of G20-Leadership Scientific Advisers has begun.

  • Under India’s G20 leadership, the second roundtable of G20-led scientific advisors from around the world began on August 28. This conference is held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.  Ajay K Sood, Chief Scientific Adviser of the country participated on behalf of the Government of India.
  • It is significant that the theme of the conference is ‘Opportunities in One Health, Diversity, Equity and Access in Science and Technology, Integrating Global Efforts to Expand Access to Scientific Knowledge’.

India has handed over the B20 chairmanship to Brazil to host the G20 events until 2024.

  • India recently handed over the B20 chairmanship to Brazil to host the G20 events until 2024.
  • The current B20 India President N Chandrasekaran handled these G20 events well and it is significant that India has led the world this year with the theme of  Vasaudeva Katumbakam (One Family, One Future, One Earth).

Agreements have been made to monitor and improve treatment of zoonotic diseases.

  • The National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB) under the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Tata Institute of Genetics for Society (TIGS), headquartered in Bangalore, have entered into an MoU to focus scientific research on detection of infectious diseases in animals( zoonotic diseases).
  • It is seen as significant that the agreement is aimed at promoting the ‘One Health’ concept of collaboration and development of animal diseases of viral and bacterial origin.

Sri Lanka’s first Karnataka Cultural Festival has started.

  • Sri Lanka’s first Karnataka Cultural Festival has been held on August 25, the Sri Lankan government announced in its latest announcement.
  • It is significant that this festival is organized by M.E World Peace Foundation in collaboration with Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center and International Cultural Council of India.
  • The Srilankan government said the event celebrated the traditional cultural diversity of the two countries and marked a significant moment in the shared cultural heritage of India and Sri Lanka.

Indian Air Force Plans to Participate in Egypt’s Tri-Army Exercise “ExerciseBRIGHT STAR-23”

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) has arrived in Egypt to participate in Exercise BRIGHT STAR-2023, a multilateral tri-army exercise to be held on August 27 at Cairo (West) Air Base, Egypt.
  • This exercise is held every two years and the exercise is scheduled to be held from August 27 to September 16, 2023.
  • It is significant that the exercise will be conducted with the main objective of speeding up defense planning and its implementation through joint operations.

Emmerson has been elected as the President of Zimbabwe for the second time.

  • It has been announced that the incumbent Emmerson Mnangagwa has been re-elected for a second and final five-year term in the recently concluded elections in Zimbabwe.
  • World political experts say the ZANU-PF party has retained its leadership of government in Zimbabwe’s 43-year history since the nation’s renaming following independence from white minority rule in 1980.

Favara, an instant payment system for the Maldives, has been launched by the government of the country.

  • Maldives Vice President Faisal Naseem launched Favara, the country’s common instant payment method, on August 26, according to a statement issued by the country’s President’s Office.
  • Note that the Favara solution was developed and developed by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).
  • It is designed to provide convenient, innovative and affordable access to digital financial services and enable users to make and receive payments instantly, the country’s government said.

Supreme Court Advocate K Parameshwar Appointed as Additional Advocate General of UP Govt.

  • K Parameshwar, a senior and eminent advocate of the Supreme Court, has been appointed as the Additional Advocate General (AAG) of the Uttar Pradesh state government in August 2023, the Union government’s latest notification said.
  • Hailing from Tripunithura, Kerala, he has been working as an advocate in the Supreme Court for the last 16 years. It is also reported that Parameshwar will appear in Supreme Court cases on behalf of the state government.

Nalinda was appointed as CEO of LAUGFS Gas Company.

  • LAUGFS Gas Plc has appointed P. Nalinda Kurukulasooriya as its Chief Executive Officer, according to an announcement issued by the company.
  • Notably, he has been appointed to the post following the elevation of the existing CEO, Dr. W. Niroshan J Pieries, as the CEO of the company’s Cluster Management. The company said that he is expected to further improve the company through his various sector experience.

Dhillon was appointed as Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT Mandi.

  • The President of India Murmu has appointed retired Lt. Gen. Kanwal Jeet Singh Dhillon as the Chairman of the Board of Governors (BoG) of the Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi, an official statement issued by the Central Government on August 27 said.
  • He has been appointed to this post for a period of three years. It is also significant that he has received medals like Uttam, Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Yudh Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal in his 39 years of military career.

A teacher from Visakhapatnam has been selected for the best teacher award at the national level.

  • It is significant that M Uma Gandhi, working as a second class teacher (SGT) at GVMC School, Shivajipalam, Visakhapatnam, has been selected for the “Best Teacher Award” by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).
  • He will receive this prestigious award from President Draupadi Murmu on September 5 in the national capital, New Delhi, the August 2023 notification of the Central Government stated.

Sports news

SP Sethuraman has won the National Chess Championship for 2023.

  • Grandmaster S.P. Sethuraman has won his title at the 2023 and 60th National Chess Championship held in Pune on August 26.
  • The Petroleum Sports Development Council member retained the title with 9.5 points in the ninth and final round. It is significant that he has won this title for the second time. He won the championship award for the first time in 2014. He received a cash prize of ₹6,00,000 for the win.

Shweta has won the title of Miss Diva Universe 2023.

  • Shweta Sharda from Chandigarh won the title of Miss Diva Universe 2023 in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • Notably, Sonal Kukreja from Delhi won the Miss Diva Supranational 2023 crown and Trisha Shetty from Karnataka won the Miss Diva 2023 runner-up crown in this final. It is seen as special that Shweta Sharda will represent India in the 72nd Miss Universe pageant to be held in El Salvador this year.

India’s Neeraj Chopra becomes the first Indian to win a gold medal at the 2023 World Athletics Championships.

  • The country’s legendary javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won India’s first gold at the finals of the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary on August 27 night.
  • Notably, he retained his medal with a throw of 88.17 meters in the men’s javelin final at the World Athletics Championships.

HS Prannoy becomes the 5th Indian to win a medal at the World Badminton Championship.

  • Legendary badminton player HS Prannoy on 26th August became the fifth Indian to win a medal in men’s singles at the World Badminton Championship 2023.
  • Prannoy lost to Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn by 21-18, 13-21, 14-21 to clinch the bronze medal. With this, it is significant that India has retained four bronze and one silver medals in men’s singles category in the history of world badminton.

Obituary

Famous poet Jayanta Mahapatra passed away.

  • Legendary poet Jayanta Mahapatra (age 95) passed away on August 27 at a hospital in Cuttack, Odisha due to old age.
  • Born in Cuttack on October 22, 1928, he is notable for being the “First Indian poet to receive the Sahitya Akademi Award for English Poetry”. The year was seen as significant because he withdrew the Padma Shri award in 2009 in protest against “rising intolerance in India” in 2015.

National Sports Day 2023

  • National Sports Day is celebrated every year on August 29, the birthday of India’s famous and greatest hockey player, Major Dhyan Chand.
  • It is significant that he represented India in almost 185 matches in his entire career from 1926 to 1948. The day is celebrated with the theme “Honoring Sportsmen”. This day is also known as Rashtriya Khel Divas.
