National News

“My Land My Country” initiative has been launched in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

  • The Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar’s “My Land My Country” campaign was launched on August 10 in its capital Port Blair.
  • Also, Port Blair Municipal Council has started its yatra from its office complex to Gandhi Park to spread awareness among the public about its main purpose. This initiative has been started by planting 75 saplings and this walk was flagged off by the President of the Municipality, Chesi Dilkush Meena.

The Coastal Fisheries Commission Amendment Bill 2023 has been passed in the Rajya Sabha.

  • The Coastal Fisheries Commission Amendment Bill 2023 was approved by the Rajya Sabha on 09th August and passed in Parliament. It is also notable that this amendment bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on August 7.
  • The bill is an amendment to the Coastal Fisheries Commission Act, 2005, which provides kisan credit cards to coastal fishermen and thereby the fishing community will progress, the Union minister said.

India and UAE conduct bilateral exercises with navies.

  • Two Indian Navy ships INS Visakhapatnam and INS Trikand arrived at Rashid Port in Dubai, UAE on August 09. The exercise is scheduled to take place from August 8 to August 11.
  • The Joint Naval Exercise between India and the United Arab Emirates, ‘Zayed Talwar’, will contribute to regional security and enhance coordination between the two countries.

The Malabar Joint Naval Exercise for 2023 has begun.

  • Indian Navy’s indigenous warships INS Kolkata and INS Sahyadri have commenced the Joint Naval Exercise Malabar with the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) along with Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) and United States Navy (USN) ships and aircraft.
  • The joint naval exercise began in Sydney, Australia from August 11 to August 21. It is notable that this Malabar naval exercise was initiated in 1992 as a bilateral joint naval exercise between the two navies of India and the US.

The Rajya Sabha has passed the Scheduled Castes Order Amendment Bill, 2023.

  • The Rajya Sabha of the Parliament on August 09 approved the Scheduled Castes Order Amendment Bill 2023 of the Constitution. It is also significant that this bill has been recently approved by the Lok Sabha.
  • The Bill provides for the repeal of the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Act 1950 which amends the list of powers of the Scheduled Castes in the state of Chhattisgarh. This Bill covers many communities including Mahar and Mehra in Chhattisgarh.

International news

The President of Sri Lanka has introduced plans for the 13th Amendment and Union decentralization.

  • Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremasinghe announced in the Parliament of Sri Lanka on August 09 that the Sri Lankan government plans to improve sea and air connectivity between the northern parts of the island of Sri Lanka with South India and re-establish ferry service between the two countries. 
  • He advocated the need to implement the 13th Amendment in a manner conducive to the development of the country and to achieve this consensus among all members of parliament in the country was necessary. It is also significant that the 13th Amendment has been passed as part of the Indo-Sri Lankan Agreement signed between the then Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Sri Lankan President JR Jayawardene in 1987.

On the advice of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, the President has approved the dissolution of the National Assembly.

  • Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sent a proposal to dissolve the country’s National Assembly on August 8, and President Arif Alvi approved it on the night of August 9.
  • The decision comes as Pakistan’s elected party government has completed its five-year constitutional tenure. It is also notable that he has taken over as the interim Prime Minister following the resignation of Imran Khan, who was the Prime Minister of Pakistan before, following a no-confidence motion.

State news

On the occasion of World Lion Day, a new anthem for lions and an online app called Sinh Suchna have been launched.

  • Following the celebration of World Lion Day on August 10, the Chief Minister of Gujarat has released a new anthem for the lion and a web and mobile app called Sinh Suchna.
  • It is also notable that Gir National Park in Gujarat, India is the only natural sanctuary of Asiatic Lions in the world. Significantly, the number of Asiatic lions there has increased to 674 as of June 2020, following continuous efforts by the forest department and the general public.

Indira Gandhi SmartPhone Program has been launched in Rajasthan.

  • Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot inaugurated the Indira Gandhi Smartphone initiative program at a grand function organized in Jaipur, Rajasthan on August 10.
  • According to the scheme, it has been announced that 1.3 crore women in the state will be distributed a free mobile phone with necessary internet facility for a period of three years. It is also notable that the Chief Minister of the state, Mr. Gehlot, has released a book titled “Digital Sakhi” in this event.

Hinduja Renewables has bagged an 80 MW project on the banks of the Narmada River.

  • An MoU has been signed between Hinduja Renewables and the state government to set up the world’s largest floating solar park on the banks of the Narmada River at Omkareshwar in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
  • The statement issued on August 09 mentioned that it is a joint venture between Madhya Pradesh Urja Vikas Nigam and Solar Energy Corporation of India. This agreement has been executed with the aim of generating 80 MW of electricity.

Consumer products company Godrej plans to invest Rs 515 crore in Tamil Nadu.

  • The country’s leading consumer goods company Godrej on August 10 signed an MoU with the state government to invest Rs 515 crore to set up a factory in Tamil Nadu to manufacture its key spare parts and consumables.
  • Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRP Raja has announced that a manufacturing unit of this company will be set up in Chengalpattu district to manufacture body care products.

Manjusha Deshpande has been appointed as Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court.

  • Advocate Manjusha Ajay Deshpande has been promoted as Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on August 10, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal has announced.
  • He has been appointed to this post for a period of two years. It is notable that the collegium has recommended him as a judge of the Bombay High Court in a recent order.

Jio Haptic has won the 2023 Technology Startup Award for Artificial Intelligence.

  • At the prestigious 13th annual Entrepreneur India Awards, Jio Haptik received the Technology Startup of the Year 2023 Award for Artificial Intelligence on 10th August.
  • It is notable that Jio Haptik has been selected as this year’s startup winner in Artificial Intelligence(AI) from 1000 other entry companies. The award recognizes efforts to develop solutions that drive innovation and set the industry benchmark for innovation.

Saraswoti has received the highest GARC Award in America.

  • US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken presented the 2023 Global Anti-Racism Champions (GARC) Award to Nepal’s renowned social activist Saraswoti on 09 August.
  • He became the “First Nepali” to receive this award from the “US State Department”. It is significant that this award has been given to him for fighting for the human rights of the poor, destitute and differently abled for more than two decades.

Plans to launch “Conversational Payments” at RBI

  • The Reserve Bank of India has decided to introduce an innovative payment processing system called “Conversational Payments” on UPI by August 2023.
  • The system is designed to enable general users to interact with the artificial intelligence platform to initiate and complete key payment transactions in a safe and secure environment.

Furlani has won gold in the long jump at the 2023 European Athletics U20 Championships.

  • Italy’s Mattia Furlani wins gold in the men’s long jump at the 2023 European Athletics U20 Championships at the Givat Ram Stadium in Jerusalem, August 09.
  • Notably, the 18-year-old retained the medal after achieving a leap of 8.23m, missing his previous personal best by almost a centimeter.

Noted writer Hari Narke passed away in Mumbai.

  • Mr. Hari Narke(aged 70), a noted writer of Maharashtra and Vice President of Samata Parishad, passed away on August 09 due to a heart attack at a private hospital in Mumbai.
  • It is notable that he was a professor at Savitribai Phule Pune University, a member of the Maharashtra State Commission for Backward Persons (BC) and a member of the Committee for the Classicalization of the State Marathi Language. His famous books are “Mahatma Phule-New Way of Search” and “Mahatma Phule Yanchi Badnami: Ek Satyashodhan”.
