What is Microneedling; What Are the Benefits?

At The School of Natural Medical Aesthetics, we offer a course, and in that course students learn, among other things, how to micro-needle. What is Micro Needling and how can it benefit your skin?

What is Microneedling?

Micro needling is a procedure designed specially to invoke the healing response in your skin causing microtrauma, in a targeted way. Using a pen with a small head that contains 10+ needles, it vibrates at high power, and at a certain depth, to pierce the superficial layer of your skin thousands of times over a few seconds. The small and controlled piercings go into your epidermis, and the upper layers of the dermis to stimulate the healing response in your skin, which results in increased collagen formation and elastin formation. This makes your skin more plumb, less textured and smoother in the process. Beyond these basic benefits, micro needling also offers several other beneficial side effects that you can take advantage of. Here is a few of them.

Improves the Quality of Your Skin Immediately

The actual procedure takes about one hour, and to achieve the best results, the procedure should leave the skin with some pinpoint bleeding, yes some blood is a good thing. Even with the slight bleeding and some redness that occurs for about 1 and a half days afterwards, you’ll notice an immediate improvement in the texture and quality of your skin. This happens because the pinprick of the needle actually stimulates remodeling of existing collages and promotes formation of new collagen and blood vessels in the skin.

Reduces Pock Marks and Scarring

Another huge benefit of Microneedling is that it helps to reduce acne scars, which are notoriously difficult to treat. If you have any sort of scarring on your face, or anywhere on your body, your body naturally goes through a process called fibrosis. This is good when healing, as it makes everything stick together, but beneath the skin the ‘glue’ is so strong that it can literally pull down the sin and create pock marks or scarring on the surface of the skin. Microneedling helps to break up all of the ‘glue’ and the fibrosis underneath the skin, which allows the skin to ‘let go’ of tenting, and release the surface of the skin. This results in a smoother surface to your skin.

Reduces Black Heads

This is another pretty cool side effect of microneedling, the controlled trauma and thousands of needle pokes actually liberate and knock out black heads during the entire procedure. Immediately after, you will notice a reduction in the total volume of black heads on your face, especially in your nose.

Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles

It has been shown that the small pin holes created by the thousands of needles break into the upper levels of the dermis and cause the release of growth factors to repair and heal from the micro damage that has been caused. Your body basically is overreacting to the small trauma, thinking there is a bigger trauma going on, and thus releases growth factors that increase collagen and elastin.  In addition, this trauma results in the formulation of tons of little blood vessels which supply oxygen, blood, and nutrients straight into the dermis. The combination of these changes results in reduction of wrinkles, healing of photo damage, and tightening of existing skin, all of which make you look younger.
