With the rapidly changing business environment, there are new complexities and challenges for organizations. There are constant disruptions in digital transformations, economic interdependence, technology, globalization that are spreading rapidly across different industries. To manage these changes, companies have to adapt their infrastructural and organizational setup of their current business models. This disruption phase has put in new demands from the education system. Also, there have been talks about the situation of the current education system in the country. What colleges need to do is take on new ideas and teach new skills to the students. As per the current industry trends, the majority of the graduates are not considered employable. Businesses feel that the graduates don’t have the skills, aptitude, and proficiency needed to cope with the challenges. Companies need professionals who have good communication skills and strong decision-making ability along with a broad blend of academics and practical training. Such professionals can easily fit into the constantly changing requirements of the businesses.

This dwindling scenario is extremely alarming and all the educational institutions throughout the country need to focus on this. Several of them have already started to gear up to take some action. Here are some ways colleges are trying to make students industry-ready:

• Colleges have started to introduce skill-oriented courses in all the spheres and streams of education. About a million students graduate from Indian universities as management and engineering students. However, because of the requisite skills the industries need, just one-third of them can get employment. The development of skills can be used for leveraging this demographic dividend. 
• Colleges are now using demonstrative teaching methodology for displaying the applicability of the curriculum. Most of the universities in India have purely theoretical courses. They are trying to revisit the course and make it more interesting, practical, and job oriented.
• Value-aided certification courses have been added with the professional degrees. Businesses want multi-skilled employees working for them. Skill development for students helps them get extra training as well as a certification. Through this, students are able to get more career opportunities.
• Confederation of Indian Industries has helped enhance the academic-industry connection. The CII focuses on the employability of the youth force. You can consider them as a liaison between the industries and the institutions. They send in the actual skillset requirements to the institutions so that they can make necessary changes to their syllabus.
• Some colleges have introduced multi-entry and multi-exit programs through which the students can come back to finish their higher studies after finishing their certificate courses or diplomas. This way, students can connect their education with a better job.
• In the past few years, more and more young people have turned to entrepreneurship. However, there are still several students who are not confident about their skills and avoid starting their own venture. The colleges need to help students with their entrepreneurship skills in the college itself. They must provide them with all the information they need for starting their own business along with how they can generate the required amount of funds for kick-starting their business. Several colleges have started incubation centres to guide and encourage students so that they can work on their startups. This way, the students are able to generate employment for themselves as well as others.
• Today, businesses are conducted across different cultures, countries, and time zones. It is more important than ever for the business schools to tie up with the institutes across the world to ensure that the students learn about global business practices. With these programs, universities are able to send their students to study with their partners and ensure that they get the relevant global exposure. Through this, students are equipped to handle the disruptive business environment and have global-standard skills.
• Earning while learning concept is a concept that is not common among Indian students. Students are now encouraged to take on freelance projects and part-time jobs while completing their courses. This way they can earn some money and gain relevant industry experience. There are so many online opportunities available that you can take advantage of. 
• Colleges are now working on strengthening and revamping their placement cells. Most of them already have a trained team to train and place their students. Throughout the year, they work on developing their rapport with industries from the local region. The placement cell teaches students analytical skills, verbal/non-verbal skills, group discussion skills, and soft skills so that the students are confident during their interviews.
• One of the hardest things faced by fresh graduates is the lack of experience. To make up for it, they need internships. Many colleges have a summer internship program. Internships can help students as well as industries. Students get real-world experience and industries get someone to get the job done for less price. Even if they don’t offer a stipend, the experience they get is worth it. This can be a motivating factor for all the students. 
• Laboratories and infrastructure at the university should be modernized to be at the same pace with the advanced technology. This way, students will be able to get a realistic picture of what the job market is really like. They will also help them figure out what they should expect while entering a field.

Colleges need to shift from their existing curriculum and transform the higher education system. They have to focus on research, innovation and promote teamwork, hands-on learning, and entrepreneurial skills. The course structure should be in such a way that students are able to fulfil the requirements of the industry by exposing them to a wide range of challenges. Also, universities have to focus on experiential, immersive, and interdisciplinary learning through projects, labs, workshops, industry visits, simulations, and internships. This way, students are able to take on real-life challenges and use them in their careers. Indian youth have incredible potential to learn fast and grasp the skills, provided they get the opportunity and right career path.
