What To Know When Gen Z and Millennials Are Your Students

Millennials and GenZ, defined as the ones born post 1995s and 2000s, get their name from the fact that they come of age at the start of the new millennium. This generation is educated, connected and involved. Thanks to social media, BTS’s recent release ON went viral within minutes, and millennials sand Gen Z can connect with anyone across the globe. Social media and OTT can make anyone instantly famous, which is why they have become a key aspect of society. While there are a number of things that define pop culture for millennials, here are the top 10 that stick out the most.

BTS: BTS is no longer just emerging stars of K-Pop. Previously, K-pop’s fandom was limited to Asia, primarily China, Japan, and Southeast Asia. However, the popularity of BTS among millennials means they are recognized all across the world. They have even grabbed two Billboards Music Awards, which is an achievement in itself.

Mukbang: This is essentially an internet fad with viewers watching “mukbangers” binge eat foods in copious amounts. This weird trend began in 2011 in Korea. The term “mukbang” originates from two Korean words- ‘muk-ja’, which means eating, and ‘bang-song, which means broadcasting. The most popular stars of Mukbang eat messy foods while chomping, loudly slurping and showing bad table manners.

Couchsurfing: Like most other things, millennials are also redefining travelling over recent years by trying to make it more cost-effective. Apart from searching for low airfare on mobile apps, they are also searching for CouchSurfing for free accommodation. They are definitely getting creative with travel. CouchSurfing is a website providing a platform for travellers to stay for free with local hosts.

OTT platforms: Millenials are one of the primary consumers of OTT platforms. OTT provides you with a whole new level of watching experience. You watch what you choose, at your own time and convenience. Of course, the popularity of OTT platforms has skyrocketed over recent years.

Game of Thrones: When it comes to OTT platforms and web series, this show definitely has to get a mention, particularly with millennials. Game of Thrones is more than simply ratings. It has grown into an immense pop culture phenomenon, with watch parties, merchandise, podcasts, fan theories, and whatnot. This show definitely belongs to the generation of selfies, low-rise jeans, and Facebook.

Memes: Slang for this generation doesn’t just revolve around emojis and acronyms like Idk, lmao, etc. Memes have become an important part of the millennials’ use of slang online. Memes can be repurposed viral content and a millennial can relate to or even a commentary of online antics. Most of them are incredibly hilarious too!

Hashtag: Previously known as the pound sign, the hashtag began in 2007 on Twitter and eventually became a common symbol in most apps, including Facebook and Instagram. Hashtags simply group together content on social media and they can be used for campaigns as well.

YOLO: This is an acronym for “You Only Live Once” and it was made popular by a song by Drake tilted “The Motto”. It has become a part of millennial slang, with people often using it to justify stupid actions.

iPhone v/s Android: This is perhaps the most common debate among millennials. These gadgets have replaced books, cameras, and even computers to a certain extent. Everyone seems to always be waiting for the next iPhone or the next Android version.

Selfie: With front camera and social media, the selfie has become a kind of self-portrait among millennials. However, unlike self-portraits, they are more in control of how the photos turn out and how they look.

Unlike their predecessors, Gen X and Y, Millenials and Gen Z are looking for connection and meaning in their endeavours. They are the generation that was born around the time when the internet was the norm around the world and hence their perception of the world is far more connected than the rest. It is the Millenials and Gen Z who are redefining how and what is considered educative anymore and they’re certainly not limiting knowledge to the confines of four walls. To get the attention of the Millenials, it’s important that the academic institutions look at making education more accessible and globally applicable.
