Amidst JNU And IIMC Fee Hike, Scholarship For 15 IIMC Students

Jawaharlal Nehru University or JNU have been protesting against their unprecedented fee hike, and Indian Institute of Mass Communication or IIMC joined them soon due to their fees too. The IIMC Alumni Association has now decided to give 15 students of IIMC Delhi a scholarship in 2020.  The committee that decided this was a five-member association named the IIMCAA Scholarship 2020 Committee with veteran journalist Anuranjan Jha at the head of the association. They will be awarding 15 new students with a scholarship of 25,000 rupees each according to the rules laid down by the association.

2019 Undertaking

This committee was formed last year in 2019, where they gave out scholarships to 11 students. This new undertaking has been initiated until 2023, for five years, when the association will have to decide whether to continue the procedure or not. Former Director-General of IIMC Mr K.G.Suresh has called for more of such scholarships to help students overcome their financial burden. JNU has seen no such undertaking while the students stay strong, and protest against the fee hike to allow economically weaker children to study at their university.

Rules

There are certain rules to be followed with regards to the scholarships provided by IIMC such as scholarships will be provided only to students who have applied for it and with relevant documents to prove why they deserve it.  Students with a minimum attendance of 75% and with a minimum aggregate of 50% in their first semester will be the only ones who will be eligible to avail the scholarships. The decision will be taken by the Association alone who may do any for in independent assessment such as discuss with alumni, or call students for an interview, they will be making the final binding decision on who to select as beneficiaries.

The Committee

After the Central Committee had a meeting on the 12th of January the five-member team for the IIMC Scholarship Association was declared which constituted of Anuranjan Jha who was the chairman and Nandita Chibbey a former associate of National Geographic, Madhur Kalra who is an alumni of the institute and has experience being a director and manager for several, Harshendra Singh Vardhan who is the General Secretary of the IIMC Alumni Association and Animesh Biswas who has been ahead at ZEE, Star and Viacom 18.

IIMC alumni have come forward to help the future journalists of the country by providing them with scholarships and the increase in a number of scholarships offered, that went up from 11 to 15 this year, is due to the fee hike imposed by the Government of India, on select central universities. JNU who were also subjected to the fee hike has not come up with any such plans from its alumni or administrative department. “IIMC Alumni would like to come forward and adopt a few scholarships to support students in need,” says Harshendra Singh Vardhan the General Secretary of IIMC Alumni Association.
