49 Indian Universities Top The Times Higher Education Emerging List

The representation of Indian universities has increased from 42 to 49 in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies University Rankings. These latest rankings 25 Indian universities in the top 200 rankings, which is an increase from 17 in the previous year.

The over rankings for 2019 have expanded to include 450 universities, whereas last year these rankings only included 378 universities across 4 continents and 43 different countries. While the latest rankings witnessed some new entrants and previous entrants improving their ranking, many Indian universities also lost their previous rankings and dropped back.

Among the top ranking Indian institutes, the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai (IIT-B) were the top-ranking Indian educational institution on the list with an overall rank of 14 and 27 respectively. However both the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai slipped from their previous year’s position due to increased competition this year.

Another shining star among the Indian institutes was Indian Institute of Technology – Roorkee, who broke into the top 40, by moving up 21 places to achieve a new ranking of 35th position. This jump in ranking can be attributed to its improvement in industry income, i.e. knowledge transfer and improvement in its research regarding volume, reputation, and income.

Some of the other Indian educational institutes and universities to improve their rankings include the Savitribai Phule Pune University, Banaras Hindu University, and Amrita University. While Savitribai Phule Pune University improved its ranking by 87 positions and was jointly ranked at 93rd with the National Autonomous University of Mexico, this can be attributed to the increase in the university’s research score and its research influence.

The Amrita University and the Banaras Hindu University also broke into the top-150 ranking with Indian Institute of Technology – Hyderabad and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune featuring in the Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies University Rankings for the very first time.

Meanwhile, Mainland China has the maximum representation with 72 educational institutions and universities featuring on the Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies University Rankings. Further, four spots in the top-5 ranking were dominated by Chinese institutions, with Tsinghua University was ranked first on the list after surpassing Peking University, who moved down to the second spot. The third sport was captured by the Zhejiang University who moved up by 3 positions, and the University of Science and Technology of China was ranked fourth. The Lomonosov Moscow State University held the fifth position.

In the words of Ellie Bothwell, Global Rankings Editor for THE, Indian education institutions and university have a lot of potentials to succeed on a global stage. Bothwell further stated that Indian institutions were quite behind regarding international outlook when compared to the global average, even though Indian educational institutions were performing well in teaching. If India could plug this gap, it would immensely raise India’s reputation on the global stage, attract international students and help vital research collaborations.

Bothwell also pointed out that educational institutes of emerging countries such as Malaysia and Egypt, which were previous lagging behind, have tremendous leaps and advancements which is reflected in their rankings.
