Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro who had downplayed the grim situation of Coronavirus has been tested positive for Coronavirus on Tuesday.
This comes at the time when Sao Paulo is planning up to open most of its shops and restaurants even though the country is still reeling under coronavirus. Mr. Bolsonaro confirmed the news to the reporters wearing masks where he said “I’m well, normal. I even want to take a walk around here, but I can’t due to medical recommendations,”
The president who was known to have often appeared in public to shake hands with his supporters and mingle in the crowd without wearing a mask where he had said that his history of being an athlete would help him to protect against the virus and it would nothing be more than the ‘little flu’ he said when taking part in huge rallies held in Brazil.
Brazil which has the world’s sixth most populous country is standing 2nd in Coronavirus affected region and is one of the corona hotspots in the world. Cities in Brazil started to lift restrictions that had been imposed to control the spread of the virus.
On Monday, Mr. Bolsonaro told supporters in Brasilia that he underwent an X-ray of his lungs that showed they were clean, and that he would be tested for COVID-19. On Tuesday, he told CNN Brazil that his fever had subsided.
Prior to this, Mr. Bolsonaro celebrated U.S Independence Day with the nation’s ambassador to Brazil Todd Chapman. They are seen celebrating alongside several ministers and aides and none of them wore masks despite being in close quarters.
The US Embassy said that Todd Chapman is not showing any Covid-19 related symptoms yet he’ll be tested.
When Bolsonaro visited Florida to meet Mr. Donald Trump he was tested 3 times after he met Mr. Trump and the test came out negative.
Currently, Brazil stands second place in World Coronavirus countdown with 1,674,655 cases and over 66,000 deaths.
