Database is a collection of information or data organised in the form of a tables, queries, reports, etc. Database Management Systems (DBMS) enable us to store, organise and retrieve in formation in the form of spreadsheets, graphs, pictures, texts, tables, audio, video, etc.
A DBMS captures and analyses data by interacting with the user and other computer software applications. Sometimes a DBMS is simply referred to as Database
Types of Databases
Text Database
This is a text that contains data for example a list of names which contains first names and surnames. This text can be modified by removing and adding elements to it.
Desktop Database
This is a more complex database. Desktop database programs are for single users. Example; MS Excel and Access are desktop database programs. An Excel spreadsheet is an example of a desktop database.
The desktop database is faster with modifying data and it can store more data than the text database.
Rational Database
The Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) allows multiple users to work with the data at the same time with security. This system stores data in columns and row which forms tables. The data is merged according to the relationships that exist between them.
Relationships may exist between elements of different tables or within the same table. RDBMS is manipulated using Structured Query Language (SQL) and includes softwares like Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MsSQLServer, etc.
There also exist hierarchical database, Object oriented, Network databases etc.
