Clinicians have always framed women’s health from a biological perspective. A biomedical framework was frequently used to portray women’s health topics in textbooks. Although this strategy has numerous advantages, it also has drawbacks that can substantially negatively impact women’s health, particularly gynecologic health. A disease-oriented biomedical model focuses on curing an illness—an approach that risks pathologizing typical components of female physiology.

When using a biomedical lens to examine women’s health, there is a risk of essentializing women and reducing them to their biological parts. As an example of this propensity, the term “women’s health” is widely used to refer to reproductive health, regardless of whether the lady intends to have children. When a woman’s components become the focus of diagnosis and treatment, this reductionism is carried over into practice. This method does not address the woman’s interpretation of the diagnosis and the impact it has on her, her significant others, and her work.

Feminist ideas on women’s growth and development differ from prior male-oriented models in that they consider women’s lived experiences and the relevance of relationships to women. Recognizing each woman as an expert promotes women’s agency. The emphasis of this method is holistic, with health evaluated in the context of each woman’s life.

Our readers must understand that we, the editors of this book, are experienced women’s health physicians whose practice philosophy is based on caring for the whole woman within the context of her lived experience. We were continually upset as professors because we couldn’t find a gynecologic textbook that we thought was appropriate for our course. Many of the books on the market were written solely from a biological standpoint and, in our opinion, did not provide enough information about the normalcy of women’s reproductive physiology.

Books by the Boston Women’s Health Book Collective, for example, were handy for ideas about health and holism but lacked the necessary material to train student clinicians. Other texts did not provide the health-oriented perspective essential to the philosophy of care advocated by nursing and midwifery, which we both passionately believe in. Other books provided components of both biological and health-oriented perspectives and beneficial decision trees or classification of issues or difficulties.

However, we thought these texts would not inspire students and practicing doctors to think critically or recognize the necessity of making judgments based on recent evidence. We set out to write a book about women’s gynecologic health from a woman-centered and holistic perspective for all of these reasons. Our goal was to write a book that stresses the necessity of honoring the normalcy of female physiology while also providing clinical knowledge useful for pathology evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment.

We feel that this women’s gynecologic health 3rd edition pdf book embodies these ideas and emphasizes the need for clinician collaboration. Some features of this feminist perspective will be apparent to our readers, while others may be more subtle. When feasible, we used depictions of entire ladies rather than pictures of merely breasts or genitalia. Rather than referring to a woman by her illness, we refer to a woman who has that ailment. For example, we refer to a woman with HIV instead of an HIV-positive woman.

We use the term birth rather than delivery because it places the ability to give birth inside the woman rather than shifting it to the clinician. We chose women’s rather than gynecologic as the first word in the title on purpose. Our objective in making these conscious selections was to remind readers to remember that they are treating a woman as a whole, not simply her body parts or a condition. This approach, we hope, stresses the necessity of treating women holistically within the context of their actual experiences.

This book was lucky to have several good contributors. Some are well-known nationally, while others may be unfamiliar to many readers. The unifying thread that connects all of our authors is their knowledge in their respective fields and their understanding of the value of evidence-based practice. Our experts include physicians, educators, and scientists. Co-authored chapters are frequently written by a clinician and researcher pair, whose collaboration provides readers with a real-world, evidence-based perspective.

We have updated, and in many cases wholly changed, all of the chapters from the second edition in this third edition to guarantee comprehensive content that reflects contemporary standards of care.

The chapter on health care for lesbian, bisexual, queer, or transgender people, for example, has been thoroughly revised, as have the ones on intimate relationship violence and sexual assault. In response to several requests from educators and readers, we have added four new chapters that provide an overview of pregnancy and postpartum care.

We believe that this edition builds on the precedents established in earlier editions and that it will help women receive evidence-based, holistic gynecologic care within the context of their lived experiences. Authors

Frances E. Likis, DrPH, NP, CNM, FACNM, FAAN, is a nurse practitioner and certified nurse-midwife with over 25 years of experience as an advanced practice registered nurse. Francie has received national recognition for her work in improving evidence-based best practices in women’s health and integrating gynecologic and reproductive health into mainstream nursing and midwifery practice. She was the only nurse on the Vanderbilt University’s Evidence-based Practice Center faculty, where she led interprofessional teams doing systematic reviews on crucial problems in health care.

The Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health has reached its highest impact factor ever under her leadership, and the number of submissions continues to rise year after year. She has been an instructor and guide for graduate students throughout her career, first as a clinical preceptor and then as a faculty member at Vanderbilt University and Frontier Nursing University. She has published numerous journal articles, systematic reviews, book chapters and made presentations, and invited talks at numerous national events and universities.

Francie has received multiple awards and honors, including the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) Kitty Ernst Award, the Vanderbilt University Alumni Award for Excellence in Nursing, the Frontier Nursing University Distinguished Service to Society Alumni Award, and the Frontier Nursing University Student Choice Award for Teaching Excellence.

She is a member of the American College of Nursing and the ACNM. She received her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees in public health from Vanderbilt University and North Carolina at Chapel Hill, respectively. Frontier Nursing University provided her nurse-midwifery schooling, while the University of Chicago provided her with medical writing and editing.

Francie is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the ACNM’s official journal, the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health, and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Nursing at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
