Preface

Emergency Medicine is comprehensive, and advances in recent years have been astounding. The field encompasses all organ systems and ranges from neonatal to geriatric, surgical, and medical. Procedural abilities must supplement our cognitive skills. Developing procedural skills is essential for the day-to-day practice of Emergency Medicine.

We have created a textbook of Emergency Medicine procedures that is clear, comprehensive, and simple to understand. This new edition of Reichman Emergency Medicine Procedures PDF covers many Emergency Medicine topics. This text will provide a single procedural reference for medical students, residents, advanced practice practitioners, and seasoned Emergentologists to base clinical practices and technical skills on. The primary goal of the PDF of Reichman Emergency Medicine Procedure is to provide a detailed and step-by-step approach to emergency department procedures.

It is solely concerned with procedures. It is not intended to be a comprehensive reference but rather an easy-to-use and clinically useful procedure book that should be available in every Emergency Department. The information and contents are complete. It is organized and written to make it easy to access and use. The level of detail is adequate for the reader to understand each procedure thoroughly. Alternative techniques or hints are presented when they are available.

Each chapter of Reichman Emergency Medicine Procedures PDF gives the reader clear and specific instructions for carrying out the procedure. Although this text may be used as a library reference, its home is in the Emergency Department, where the processes are carried out. Despite its size, I hope that this book will be used by medical students, residents, advanced practice providers, and practicing clinicians.

This book will meet the needs of people with a wide range of backgrounds and training. While this text is primarily intended for Emergentologists, many other practitioners will find it helpful. This book is designed for those who provide care to people suffering from an acute illness or injury. This is an authoritative work on procedural skills for medical students and residents. Medical students, residents, nurse practitioners, physician’s assistants, and practitioners with limited experience will find everything they need to learn the entire procedure in each chapter.

This text will be helpful for reviewing procedures that are rarely performed in the clinic, office, or urgent care center by family physicians, internists, and pediatricians. This book will also be helpful to Intensivists and Surgeons who care for critically ill patients. The experienced clinician can receive a quick refresher on the procedure while improving their knowledge and skills. This text is an easy-to-understand and well-illustrated source of didactic material for physicians who are actively involved in education.

The book is divided into sections representing an organ system, a body area, or a surgical specialty. With a few exceptions, each chapter is devoted to a procedure. This should provide easy access to complete information. The chapters follow a similar format to ensure that information is retrieved as quickly and efficiently as possible. Several acceptable methods are frequently available.
To perform a procedure, you must first prepare. While we have described alternative techniques in many chapters, we have not included all alternative techniques.

Key information cautions and essential facts are highlighted in bold throughout the text. With a few exceptions, each chapter follows a consistent format. The relevant anatomy and pathophysiology are discussed, followed by the procedure’s indications and contraindications. A list of the required equipment is provided. The patient’s preparation is addressed, including consent, anesthesia, and analgesia. Following that, the procedure is described in a step-by-step format.

Caution signs are placed in areas where problems are common. For each procedure, alternative techniques and helpful hints are presented. The topic of aftercare and follow-up is discussed. Any potential complications are described and the methods for preventing and treating them. Finally, a summary includes a review of any critical or significant information.

This book covers a wide range of procedures that may be carried out in a rural or urban Emergency Department. This includes methods that are performed routinely or infrequently; processes that are frequently performed in the acute care, clinic, and office settings; procedures that are commonly performed in the daily practice of Emergency Medicine; and procedures that are rarely to rarely performed but critical to the practice of Emergency Medicine.

Some procedures are unusual, may be unfamiliar to the reader, and provide an opportunity to learn new information that can be converted into a valuable skill with proper practice and training. A few of the procedures are only performed by Surgeons and are included to help patients understand when they present to the Emergency Department with a complication. This new edition has added chapters, algorithms, clinical images, cutting-edge technological advancements, radiographs, and tables based on reader comments, input, and suggestions.

We consulted with a wide range of authors. The majority of the authors are residency-trained, board-certified, and practicing emergency medicine physicians. We have the honor of having some contributors who are experts in their fields but are not in the area of Emergency Medicine. Because of differences in education, experience, and training, all authors have biases. We attempted to base all of our recommendations on solid clinical and scientific evidence.

However, when appropriate, we have not excluded personal experience or preferences. The authors also present alternative techniques in these cases. With the third edition, this book has grown and changed. I am delighted and honored to be editing the text’s third edition. Your continued feedback and suggestions, as a reader, would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if any additional procedures should be added or removed in the future.
