 Importance of Mahanadi River


Mahanadi is a major river in Odisha and like all indian rivers it is a reversed one it plays a major role in the life of people and is part of all the major religious functions and festivals, many important cities have sprung up long its banks, including raipur and cuttack the hirakund dam near sambalpur is a major landmark on the banks of the mahanadi, dam was the longest in the world when it was constructed in 1957, today its a major tourist attraction for travelers the hirakund dam regulated the flow of mahanadi and produces hydroelectricity, the dam has formed a manmade lake which is 55 km long this important river also irrigates a fertile valley whose chief crops are rice oilseed and sugarcane.


Main Features of Godavari River


     Godavari the second largest river in India after the ganga has it source in the western ghats of mahrashtra, it then flows eastward across the deccan plateau to enter telangana the godavari crosses andhra pradesh to enter the bay of bengal through a delta, like most rivers in india the godavari too is a sacred river, every twelve years a major festival known as the pushkaram is held on the banks of the Godavari river, it flows for 1465 km and has one of the largest river basin in india, the second largest mangrove forest in the country is found on the banks of the godavari, important dams on the river provide hydroelectric power and irrigate vast areas to nurture the land its people, godavari delta along with the delta of the krishna river is known as the rice granary of south india, godavari is joined by many tributaries as it flows towards the bay of bengal, these tributary include the penganga, pranahita sabari, wardha indravathi, manjeera and manair, godavari is not the name of just a river it also teh name of a ship in the indian navy, the INS godavari has been named after the mighty river, the krishna one of the indias longest river flows for almost 1400 km through south central india, it rises in the western ghats of mahrashtra and drains large areas of four states, krishna is an important source of irrigation for the states it flows through it has a large and highly fertile delta that joins that of the godavari to form the rice granary of south india, there are many pilgrimage centres on the banks, the last surviving mangrove forests in the krishna estuary have been declared as the krishna wildlife sanctuary, is home to a large number of resident and migratory birds, as well as a wide variety of animals, the river is reversed as secred.


Tributaries of Krishna River


     Krishna river has many tributaries that join it in its 1400 km journey from the western ghats in Mahrashtra to the bay of bengal, these tributaries are the main source of water in teh western ghats the tunga and the bhadra rivers join in the western ghats to form the tungabhadra which is the main tributary of krishna, however the longest tributary is the bima river which has a length of 861km the warana and the panchganga meet the krishna near sangli, four other rivers the venna river, urmodi river, tarli and koyna river join the krishna in satara district, the confluence is popularly known as preeti sangam.


Source of the Kaveri River


     Kaveri river as it is also known rises in the Bramagiri hills of the western ghats in karnataka, river flows mainly through the states of karnataka and tamil nadu, it humbles down the eastern ghats in a series of waterfalls, the kaveri supplies hydrolectric power to mysore, banglore and the kolar gold fields, mettur dam in tamil nadu has created an imporant agricultural and industrial area by improving irrigation and providing hydropower to the state, before entering the bay of bengal the kaveri forms a wide delta which is often referred to as the garden of south india, kaveri too is considered to be a holy river and is sometimes called dakshina ganga, or the ganga of the sourth, kaveri is called the jeevanadhi in karnataka in kannada this means the river supporting life and that is exactly what the kaveri is, basin cover tamil nadu, karnatak, it forms the island, tributaries of the kaveri are important rivers in themselves one of the tributaries of the kaveri river is the shimsha river, total length of this tributary is two hundred and twenty one kilometers another important tributary is the hemavati, another tributary is the second largest river in tamil nadu it is two hundred and seventeen kilometers long and flows through the states of kerala and tamil nadu, arkavati, handhole, lakshmana, tirtha, kabini rivers all join the kaveri at different points.


Features of Subernarekha


     Subernarekha is an interstate river that winds its way across Jharkhand, west bengal and odisha it has it source near ranchi the capital of jharkhand, it flows the longest distance through jharkhand and shorter distances through west bengal and odisha before finally reaching the bay of bengal after 395 km, river has many tributaries including the kharkal, roro, kanchi, harmu nadi, damra, kamu, chinguru and others, spectacular hundru falls are created when the down from a height of 98 meters creating incredible rock formations, getalsud reservoir is located across the subernarekha to meet muncipal water demands of ranchi city and the adjoining industrial area, river starts at the confluence of the sankh and south koel rivers near rourkela, has it source near the jharkhand chhattisgarh border while the south koel also originates in jharkhand, major portion of the brahmani flows through odisha in fact it is odisha second longest river with a length of 480 km there are several dams across the river, which meet the irrigation and hydroelectric power needs of the regions through which it flows, together with the rivers mahanadi and baitarani forms a large delta before emptying into bay of bengal, the main tributaries of brahmaputra river besides the sankh and south koel are the karo and tirka rivers.
