Brahmaputra has three headstreams in Tibet, from tibet the river enters Arunachal Pradesh in norther eastern India it winds through the mountains and then descends into assam, it is known by several different names during its journey the river becomes officially the Brahmaputra only when it is about 1450 km away from the bay of bengal, then enters the plains of Bangladesh finally, it forms a delta along with the river ganga, as it reaches the bay of bengal, son of Brahama creator while most Indian rivers have female names is an exception, however in the course of its journey its known by different names, in tibet is called the Yarlung Tsangpo which means the purifier chinese refer to the river as Yarlung Zangbo, In Arunachal Pradesh river is known as the siang, it is also called the Dihang River, the river is known as the Jamuna, it joins the ganga, and combined flows of these two rivers are known as padma, it joins the another downstream the united streams are there after known as the Meghna, and it is with this name that the river ends its journey.

 

Important Tributaries of Brahmaputra

 

     In the course of its long journey from tibet to the bay of bengal, the Brahmaputra is joined by many tributaries, the river is known as the tsangpo its main tributaries here the Lhasa and the Nyang Qu, Raidak river is one of the main tributaries of Brahmaputra river in the lower course, river is known as the wrong in upper course in Bhutan, sankosh river is another tributary it rises in northern bhutan and then flows into the brahmaputra in the state of Assam, and its known as teh Siang, the river meet two other major tributaries of the Brahmaputra, Dibang and Lohit at a place named Kobo, its from this confluence point that the river is known as the Brahmaputra till it enters Bangladesh, there it has a main tributary the teesta river, its a blessing to the regions it flow through as it provides both irrigation and transportation at the same time it cases much sorrow to the people because of its frequent floods that cause widespread destruction.

 

Importance of Brahmaputra

 

      From its origin in southwestern tibet the putra flows across southern tibet to break through the himalayas in great gorges, it flows southwest through the assam valley and south through bangladesh where it called the Jamuna, in Bangladesh it merges with the ganga to form a vast delta, in india it accounts for nearly 30 percent of the total water resources and about 40 percent of the total hydropower potential of the country, river is one of the few rivers in the world that exhibits a tital bore as in the sea, narmada is one of the peninsular rivers that has it source in central of india, it begins its journey from Amarkantak in madhya pradesh and winds its way through madhya pradesh and gujarat to enter the gulf of khambhat, river has many waterfalls and tributaries and numerous cities and town flourish on its banks, since ancient times the river has always been an important link between the Arabian sea and the ganga river valley, today is known as the lifeline of madhya pradesh the river its 41 tributaries quench the thirst of millions and irrigate almost one lakh hectare area in the state.

 

    Narmada rises from Amarkantak in the maikal ranges of madhya pradesh it runs for 1312 km and is the third longest river which has a course that is entirely within india, river flows from east to west across the indian peninsula into the arabian sea, it merges into the ocean at the point called narmada flows though the state of madhya pradesh and maharashtra, as a result millions of people including the tribual collection such as Gonds, Bhils, are heavily dependent on its water, has numerous, they provide water for irrigation and hydroelectric power to both rural and urban areas.

 

Features of Tapti River

 

     Tapti river is an important river in central of india it rises in the satpura ranges of madhya pradesh and runs for 724 km through madhya pradesh, maharashtra and gujarat before reaching the arabian sea, tapti drains an area it runs parallel to the narmada which flows to the north of the tapti, two rivers are separated by the satpura range like the narmada tapti also runs from east to west the two river valleys and the mountain rane between northern and peninsular india, main tributaries of the tapti river are the purna, girna, panjhra, vaghur, bori and aner, tapti river of great religious economic and ecological significance, according to hindu mythology, tapti is the daughter of surya the sun god its believed that surya created the tapti river in order to save him self from his own intense heat, hindus consider the river a goddess, water of the tapti river is widely used for irrigation purposes, the river is agriculture very important as it drains in area of over 65 km spread over madhya pradesh. in earlier times surat on the tapti river was an important port from which goods were exported, melghat tiger reserve in amravati district a part of project tiger is situated on the southeast bank of tapti river, it is also known as Tapi, thailand has tapi river too it was named after the indian river.

 

Features of Mahanadi River

 

     Mahanadi River is one of the great river of east central India its impossible to pin point one source but flows first as a rather narrow stream through Chhattisgarh plain, later its joined by the south river, and becomes wider as it enters odisha state the river then winds its way through the eastern ghats before enter the odisha plain, mahanadi 858 km journey finally ends at the bay of bengal, drains an area of around 141 km it was notorious for its devastating floods, the situation changed with the construction of the Hirakud dam today network of canals, barrages, and check dams keep the river well in control.
