IAS Preparation Guide for Beginners

Eligibility Criteria for IAS exams

IAS Syllabus

The syllabus for IAS competitive exam includes Indian Politics, Geography, History, Environmental Science, General Knowledge and other subjects related to World History, Indian Society and etc.

The IAS exam pattern has divided into 3 stages:

  • Prelims have 2 papers for 200 marks each,
  • Mains have 9 papers for 300 marks each

The personality test is for those candidates, who have qualified both in Prelims and Main exams. This is mainly for testing the candidate’s knowledge, personality, aptitude, leadership qualities, general awareness, interests in handling responsibilities and problems solving.

Here are few preparation tips for beginners.

➔ Collect all the relevant information from the respective official web pages including exam timetable, application form, last date for submission, model Paper, etc.

➔ Start your preparations by collecting all general knowledge books, social studies books, model papers, sample papers, previous year papers by approaching coaching centers.

➔ Take a proper advice from your seniors, lectures, and friends, who are much thorough with the exam pattern and UPSC syllabus.

➔ The newspaper is the best guide for IAS preparation.  Make a regular habit of reading the newspaper and make a note of all important points.

➔ Practice number of model papers, solve more questions from UPSCbooks.

➔ Practice makes a man perfect. The more you practice; you are more comfortable with questions and can perform well in your Exams.

➔ Use the tips, guidelines, and shortcuts given by your lectures. Take an advice from your seniors and toppers.

➔ Have a brief study on different guides or books, as there are chances of repetition of questions.

➔ Try to cover the complete syllabus by dividing the notes into several parts, which helps in completing syllabus in a very short time period.

➔ Stop all the unnecessary activities during the study hour. For e.g. – stop messaging or chatting with your friends, etc.
