Super Meat Boy

Super Meat Boy

Super Meat Boy is a hard as nails platformer that was released in 2010 by Team Meat. The main developers of the game were Edmund Mcmillen who was the artist and generally the creator of this game, Tommy Refenes who was the programmer of the game, and Danny Baranowsky who was the composer of the game’s music.

Super Meat Boy is more of a tribute to older games, and the game definitely was inspired by Super Mario Bros. And much like the plumber’s story itself, Meat boy’s story is almost the same. “Meat Boy” the protagonist of the game and “Bandage Girl” his girlfriend (and future wife), were relaxing until the antagonist of the game “Dr Fetus” punches Meat Boy and kidnaps Bandage Girl for no real reason while flipping Meat Boy and the player constantly.

The game definitely wants to pay tribute to older NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) games, and the cutscenes of the worlds before you enter are references to these games, as well as making sense in the story. Speaking of cutscenes, they’re really fun to look at. Made by Edmund Mcmillen, you can see the dedication and love put into them. Their art style, however, seems to be influenced by older Newgrounds animations. Probably because that’s what Edmund is comfortable with.

And finally, let’s talk about the most important part, the gameplay. The gameplay itself is amazing. The controls are so good, that when you die, its almost always your fault. Although very challenging, it’s super rewarding to finally complete a level that you were stuck in. And not only that, when you finish a level you get to see a replay, and in that replay, Multiple Meat Boys are shown to show you how many attempts you did on that level. There are also seven worlds, and many unlockable characters (most of the originating from other indie games), and they’re all fun to play with.

There are even secret cheat codes that let you play like other characters. And on the pc version of the game, it has an extra world called “The Internets” in which you can play levels made by other people, and you could even upload levels yourself (doesn’t work anymore though). The best part about this game though is how accessible it is. Meat Boy only has a jump and a sprint button, and can not get any better, so the player gets better at the game and might even finish levels quicker. Speedrunning this game is also a really fun part because its incredibly simple yet difficult to pull off, but those juicy speedruns are always worth it.

Overall, I think this game even after a decade is still worth it and you should definitely give it a try despite being a really difficult game.
