Famous Criminals: Roberto Suarez Gomez

Roberto Suarez Gomez was a Bolivian Drug Lord, one of the main Pablo Escobar suppliers and the bigger cocaine producer in the world with over 400 million dollars per year in his prime.

He was born in 1932 to a rich family that made lots of money from Livestock and rubber selling. In the 70s he started his coca trading carrier in cooperation with Pablo Escobar. In fact, he had a fleet of aircraft, and he flew cocaine from Bolivia Amazon to Bolivia for 9000 dollars per kilo.

In 1983 Roberto and Escobar made a deal with Fidel and Raul Castro. Fidel and Raul wanted to use drugs as a weapon against America. So they made a deal, the two drug lords were giving millions to the two politicians per day and the Politicians let them continue their trafficking and using Cuban airports. Because of some problems with DEA (an organization that tries to stop drug trafficking and dealing) Suarez made his own private air force and a private army with 1500 bodyguards.)

Roberto financed the successful military coup in Argentina. His stepbrother was Minister of Internal Affairs during the dictatorship and he protected Roberto’s illegal activities. In 1981 his favorite son was arrested for smuggling and he offered 3 billion dollars to Reagan to put him out of jail but he refused. He was arrested in 1988 after much effort by DEA and Bolivian police. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison but he served half because of health problems and good behavior. In 2000 he died of a heart attack.
