To L. Stehli

Dear Frau Stehli, 31 October 1952

Were I not old and ill I would take the trouble to explain to you personally why human ideas· of God are not necessarily right.

God is something Unknowable. An old German Mystic has said: “God is a sigh in our souls.”

Paul, as you know, said something similar.1 My personal religious convictions are not shaken in the slightest by the fearful contradictions in the Biblical texts.

I just wanted to tell you this to set your mind at rest.

With kind regards, C.G. Jung   ~Carl Jung, Letters Vol. I, Page 86-87

1 Conceivably Romans 8:26: ” … the spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words” (RSV) .
