Indian Stock Market Timings – All Time in 1 Guide

Stock market timings in India are something which every trader and investor should know. In fact, if anyone who deals in the Stock Market or its related field must know everything about share market timing. The Indian stock market comprises of two exchanges: National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). However, the timings of both the exchange are similar.

Before we go ahead, it is important to learn that the stock markets remain closed on the weekends. Both BSE and NSE do not work on Saturday and Sunday. In addition, both the exchanges remain closed on national holidays as well. Let us now see the stock market timings of NSE and BSE.

  • Normal time for equity market – 9:15 am to 03:30 pm, Monday to Friday.
  • Trading time for commodity (MCX) market – 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM, Monday to Friday.
  • Trading time for Agri-community (NCDEX) market – 10:00 AM to 05:00 PM, Monday to Friday.

Stock Market Timings in Details

At what time Indian stock markets open is often the question of new investors in the market. Another popular question is what is nse closing time or is the Indian stock market open today, etc. The questions are endless when it comes to share market timing. The stock market timing can be divided into three sessions. They are:

  1. Pre-opening session
  2. Normal session
  3. Post-closing session

Let us understand each of them in detail.

Pre-Opening Session

  • The stock market opening time in India is 9 a.m.
  • The pre-opening session or pre-market session is conducted between 9 a.m. to 9.15 a.m.
  • The concept of thepre-opening session was introduced to reduce the market volatility during the stock market opening.
  • Furthermore, during the period of 9 a.m. to 9.08 m., the orders can be placed and modified. However, after 9.08 a.m. no new order shall be taken until 9.15 a.m.
  • During 9.08 a.m. to 9.12 a.m., the orders placed are matched and trades are confirmed.
  • In addition, the period from 9.12 a.m. to 9.15 a.m. is buffer period to ensure asmooth transition from pre-market session to normal market session.

Normal Market Session

  • The normal market session or normal trading session starts from 9.15 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.
  • During this time, the traders and investors can purchase and sell the shares. When the buying price of any share is equal to the selling price, the transaction is executed. In fact, this type of transaction is termed as abilateral matching transaction.
  • Furthermore, the normal market session does not have any lunch or tea hour break. To put it another way, the share market remains open even during the lunch and tea
  • The stock market closing time in India is 3.30 p.m. In addition, the period from 3.30 p.m. to 3.40 p.m. is price calculation period.
  • The weighted average price of a stock between 3 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. is its closing price.
  • Similarly, BSE and NSE index closing price is the weighted average price of the stocks that are constituents of theindex between 3 p.m. to 3.30 p.m.

Post-closing Session

  • The post-closing session starts at 03:40 p.m. and closes at 4:00 p.m.
  • During this session, purchase, and sale of share take place at the closing price of the stocks. However, the purchase and sale of shares are possible only if there are substantial buyers for sellers and vice versa.

The above three sessions represent the stock market timing of stock exchanges in India. However, one special trading session happens not during the market hours. It takes place during the festival of Diwali. The trading session is termed as “Mahurat Trading”. The date and time are declared few days before Diwali. In fact, the trading session begins in the evening and lasts for one hour. The timing of the session, in general, is 6.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. The pre-market session is from 6.15 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.

Commodity and Agri-Commodity Market Timings

An individual dealing in the stock markets must be aware of the trading timing of commodity and agri commodity markets as well. The commodity market i.e. MCX is open from 10 a.m. to 11.30 p.m. Furthermore, the timings for the agri-commodity market is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Both the markets operate from Monday to Friday, unless there is a public holiday.  Both the markets remain closed on Saturday and Sunday.
