As an art student, Literature - in - English is listed as a core subject in the Senior School Certificate Examinations. It is a core subject in the sense that a candidate will have to take one of Literature - in - English, Geography or History. The subject has been recording a fairly high entry rate. However, only 20% of candidates record credit level pass and above.

Some candidates understand the rubrics. Some show some improvement in the language of their answers in a few instances, some were able to arrange their answers in logical sequence.

Candidates generally perform well in questions that requires giving an account. However, they need to be trained to pay greater attention to important details. A few candidates demonstrate adequate understanding of terms like "character description", "satire", "one's own impression", "theme of blood"! Etc.

One of the best described weaknesses of candidates observed is lack of textual comprehension. Most of them have hazy knowledge of the contents of the prescribed texts. In most cases, candidates rely on "Study Aids" which are not adequate substitutes for the main texts. Some questions that are straight forward and which requires direct and uncomplicated answers are in most cases badly treated by candidates.

Their power of expression is also weak, resulting in poor delivery of ideas poor. Close textual reference and echoes which are the backbone of any literature are largely ignored or poorly utilised. Only a few candidates are able to understand the rubrics and demands of each question adequately. The degenerating performance of candidates can be attributed to various causes ranging from lack of qualified teachers too some of the following reasons why you fail literature

  • Failure to purchase texts recommended for the subject.
  • Wrong interpretation of the questions.
  • Infringement of the rubrics.
  • Hazy knowledge of texts.
  • Poor or non-development of ideas and points.
  • Inadequate preparation for the examination.
