Review: Cappuccino & Espresso Shot @ Birch Coffee

Certainly a hidden gem in a big city, Birch Coffee was nestled away behind the hustle and bustle of 5th Ave in Manhattan and a offers a homely feel when looking to unwind after a long days work. Birch is located within The Gershwin Hotel so it may be a bit confusing for your first visit but once your in, you’ll find it’s a place of its own. Lets talk coffee.

Home to the “Growler”, their popular 64oz bottled cold brew iced coffee (read New Fork City’s Review on it here), Birch Coffee is a unique coffeehouse experience the moment you walk in. Their interior is designed “green” from recycled woods to local farm products so I felt relaxed the moment I arrived, which is unusual since most establishments have an industrial feel and are often intimidating for the new guy.

I was interested in trying their specialty blend from Kenya but for the 2nd time in as many visits, Birch no longer offers this roast. Bummer since its listed as an offering on their website. The barista did take the time to explain the house espresso & cappuccino, so I considered both.

Espresso: Roasted just a day before serving, the single espresso was very smooth on top and had a strong, stern aroma that was flavorful but unfortunately the second half of the shot was a tad bitter. Overall, it was quite the kicker and prepared me for the cappuccino.

Cappuccino: I couldn’t be more impressed. I want to stress that I will forever be an espresso guy at heart but this may have changed all that. I speak highly because their cappuccino is the smoothest, strongest milk based espresso I’ve bed had. That’s saying something. If your looking for a great body, light froth and chocolate aroma, look no further. I’ll be back for more.

All in all, Birch Coffee is a ruse like no other. From the leave a book-take a book concept in the upstairs library, to the unique cold brew iced coffee growlers, one could get lost in a conversation with friends in this homely home away from home. Bring your laptop, play some chess, or take a break from the constant motion in Manhattan and I promise you’ll be glad you did. Birch Coffee.
