How to use an espresso Moka Pot the easy way

Our Senseo machine is out of action so I thought I’d bring out the old Moka Pot for my Sunday morning hit, but the memories of using it previously, and the clean up afterwards reminded me why we got a senseo machine in the first place.

So this time I thought I’d try to merge the new technologies with the old, and use some Espresso Pods with the old pot, and here are the results.

Pro’s Con’s No measuring out required More expensive than loose coffee Faster to prepare Less authentic Tasted authentic Used 3 pods So easy to clean up Paper pods less compostable? Ready to go again straight away

I used 3 x 62mm Senseo Pods in this Med/Large Moka pot, so that is approximately 24g of coffee, and this was enough for a good sized mug when I’d added milk, and an espresso on the side. I tamped each pod with my thumb to firm them into the coffee holder, and I think getting this part right is the secret to success. If there is room around the pod then the steamy water from the pot reservoir might bypass the coffee. The advantage of pods are that I didn’t have to grind the beans, or measure the ground coffee out, so it was quick, easy and there was no spillage.

The pods are great to use, for another reason too, as they are fresh every time, since they each come wrapped in their own foil. For occasional use this makes more sense as I won’t have beans going off and therefore no wastage. Then I set it on the stove and it brewed as normal, taking around 3 minutes.

I added milk to the mug, and the espresso was on the side. Both were super tasty, and strong, although the results were not as strong as you’d get from a pure espresso machine. Easily good enough for me though.

Then the next bit was so easy, as I flipped out the used Senseo pods, and flipped them into the compost bin on the counter top, so the pot was ready to go again. Normally I have to knock out the grounds, and give everything a rinse, when using ground coffee.

They were hot but not so hot I couldn’t pick them up quickly.

The pods compost, along with the rest of the kitchen scraps.

I got these Senseo Pods from Aromo and they are not the cheapest you can find, we know that, but that is because they use the best beans in the first place.

If you have a go at using pods in  Moka pot please let me know your experiences.
