Chef’s Beer is the culmination of a labor of love between two of my favorite breweries in the world, Zmajska Pivovara and Varionica Craft Brewery, my friend, Alen Bibić, proprietor and winemaker extraordinaire at Bibich Winery, and Mate Janković, one of Croatia’s greatest chefs. 

The intent behind Chef’s Beer was to create a premium beer that would pair well with many of the top cuisines from all over the globe, in particular that of Croatia.  After just one sip of this worldly brew, I would say those intentions were fulfilled. Thank you to Alen Bibić for giving me a few bottles of this delectable brew to enjoy. 

This complex and aromatic beer will round off most gastronomic experiences. Its intensity will cause your senses to remember it as an emotion rather than just a libation.  It is reminiscent of an American-styled barleywine beer. However, the maraština grapes fermented in the brew give it a unique Dalmatian flavor, you soon won’t forget. Mariština is an indigenous white grape variety from the Dalmatian coast, recommended for all Dalmatian sub-regions, and the Croatian Coast.

The sad news is that there are a limited number of this amazing beer left to be found.  I am a very lucky man to have been given three Cheers to the 4 collaborators for making such a special beer. Let’s hope they have plans to make more in the near future. Živjeli!!!
