Only a multi-faceted engagement with water by NGOs, companies, academia and governments can effectively manage businesses and communities according to a recent survey poll on Water.

The survey was conducted in more than 80 countries and some of the best solutions included:

Recycling/Water Treatment Systems: On World Water Day in March 2017, panellists advocated a new mind-set for waste water treatment. There are various countries, like the rich East Asian republic of Singapore, that are trying to recycle to cut water imports and become more self-sufficient. Singapore is a leader in developing advanced technology that cleanses waste water for drinking water as well as other uses.

Appropriate Pricing/Water Rights Markets: According to experts from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which is an international economic forum of 31 of the world’s richest countries, raising water prices will lower pollution and waste. This however is not the thinking of Circle of Blue’s May investigation; it found that water pricing systems in major U.S. cities are obsolete, send the wrong signals, and need reform.

Water Catchment/Harvesting: Water catchment systems are critical in areas that have no other reliable water sources. Two countries that contend with some of the worst effects of climate change, India and Pakistan, are overhauling Rainwater Harvesting Systems in an effort to provide independent control of water resources. Part of the new system in India includes regulations such as the one that mandates rooftop rainwater harvesting systems for all new buildings in 18 of 28 states and four of its seven federally-administered union territories

Community-Based Governance/Partnerships: Community organisations are vital to resolving water issues because they elevate the experiences of those whose voices merit more influence. This was proven in April 2017 at the alternative climate change conference in Bolivia, a gathering meant to foster international partnerships among underrepresented groups, where indigenous groups met to discuss the way forward. More effective governance at grassroots-level gives communities stature, and can lead to effective policy changes on a national scale.
