5 Modern Twists on Classic Cocktails for Repeal Day 2016

Happy Repeal Day 2016! December 5th marks the 83rd anniversary for the repeal of Prohibition in the United States. Effective from 1920-1933, National Prohibition banned the selling, manufacturing and transporting of alcohol was banned across United States. So raise your glass and toast to the end of prohibition’s folly with one of these twists on classic era cocktails!

Repeal Day 2016 Drink Guide:

Layered Cobbler


Looking for something a bit sweet to erase the Bitter memory of the US government’s attempt to regulate the people’s appetites? Then try the Layered Cobbler, a mix of rum, blueberries, lemon juice, simple syrup and a dash of Peychaud bitters over pebbled ice. Crushed or cubed ice is totally fine if you don’t have a full-fledged ice program in your home bar!

  • 1 ½ oz Zacapa Rum
  • ¾ oz Lemon Juice
  • ½ oz  Simple Syrup
  • 1 Dash Peychaud Bitters
  • 5 Blueberries

Garnish: 3-5 Blueberries

Muddle blueberries in a shaker and layer into a rocks glass with crushed iced. Build remaining ingredients in shaker and strain.

Maple Old Fashioned

This twist on the classic old-fashined pairs tequila, maple syrup, orange and cinnamon.

  • 2 parts Hornitos® Black Barrel® Tequila
  • ¼ part maple syrup
  • 4 dashes Angostura® bitters
  •  Orange peel
  • Cinnamon stick

Combine ingredients in a mixing glass and stir. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with an orange peel and a cinnamon stick. 

100% Dry Rye Manhattan

During Prohibition, Canadian Club became one of the most smuggled whiskies in the country. This variant of the classic Prohibition cocktail features Canadian Club 100% Rye (a new expression that celebrates 150+ years of whisky making heritage and tradition. Created with 100% Rye, bottled at 80 proof).

  • 2 parts Canadian Club 100% Rye Whisky
  • 1 part Dry Vermouth
  • 1 dash Angostura Bitters
  • Lemon Peel, zested over glass

Combine ingredients in a rocks glass and stir. Served straight or on the rocks. Garnish with lemon peel.

Rum Manhattan

Impress you’re the rum-lover in your life by creating a twist on the classic Manhattan with a delightful blend of Zacapa Rum, sweet vermouth, orange and Angostura bitters over ice.

  • 2 oz Zacapa Rum
  • 1 oz Sweet Vermouth
  • 1 Dash Orange Bitters
  • 1 Dash Angostura Bitters
  • Garnish: Twist of Orange and Lemon Peel

Add ingredients over ice in shaker then stir. Strain into rocks glass over ice and add garnish

Tequila Bee’s Knees

  • 1 ½ parts Hornitos® Reposado Tequila
  • ¾ part fresh lemon juice
  • ½ part fresh cranberry juice
  • ½ part honey
  • Maraschino cherry
  • Lemon twist

Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a coupe glass and garnish with a maraschino cherry and a lemon twist.
