PIEMONTE BARBERA. YOUR DAILY WINE

Piemonte Barbera is the spiritual home of the Barbera grape.

Having a quality pyramid when it comes to European Wine labeling is both a blessing and a curse. The curse is that we wine lovers often mistake the foundation of the pyramid as somehow being low in quality. While it’s true that the lower levels on those pyramids usually have less stringent production regulations (and are therefore less expensive and are made in greater quantities), they are not so much “lesser” as they are different. That is often the case when it comes to the blessing part of those quality pyramids: an assurance of place.

When it comes to the Piemonte Barbera DOC level of the quality pyramid, that place happens to be the spiritual home of the lovely Barbera red wine grape. In other words, it’s still Barbera from arguably the best place in the entire world to grow Barbera! In the case of Piemonte Barbera, the wine must be a minimum of 85% Barbera from the region, and 11% or more in alcohol by volume, but there aren’t any aging requirements. As you’ll see in the video here, the freedom from the aging regulations that define the other levels of the quality pyramid mean that you’re getting Piedmont Barbera in its freshest, purest, and friendliest form.
