It’s Time For Cocktails! Vintage Spirits And Forgotten Cocktails

The Secret Cocktail!

These days I seem to have a lot of time on my hands ~ with the “social distancing” intended to minimize the spread of the Coronavirus. So, when life gives me lemons, I make cocktails! Perfect timing to enjoy my Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails book that was sent to me by Quarto Cooks (quartocooks.com).

Continuing the time theme…my Art Deco Hourglass Cocktail Shaker is the perfect vessel to make “The Secret Cocktail”. The author, Ted Haigh (Dr. Cocktail) describes this gin-based cocktail as “Opalescent, light-rose hue. Very fetching.” Want to know the better known name for this secret cocktail and the recipe? You will find it on page 309 in this fun cocktail book!

The Millionaire

This bright red hued cocktail is made with a recipe from 1937. It reminds me of a Cosmopolitan with a kick! (Dr. Cocktail’s book includes an updated version that is not as sweet on page 270.)

The 1937 Millionaire

Juice of 1 lime

1 dash grenadine

1/3 part sloe gin

1/3 part apricot brandy

1/3 part Jamaica rum

Shake vigorously in an iced cocktail shaker.

Strain into a cocktail glass.

Garnish with a lime wedge.

Becky’s Biotanical Cucumber Mint Vodka Tonic

I am trying not to venture out to the store unless absolutely necessary. Fortunately I have lots of spirits at my house to enjoy mixing cocktails. I am enjoying trying the new Ketel One Botanical Vodkas. Smooth with natural botanical and fruit essences. Refreshing!

Make jumbo Cucumber Ice Cubes – place 1 thin slice of cucumber on each side of compartments of jumbo ice cube trays. Fill each compartment with water and freeze.

Pour 2 ounces Ketel One Botanical Cucumber Mint Vodka in a highball glass. Top with chilled tonic water (leave enough room for ice cubes). Stir vigorously. Place 2 Jumbo Cucumber Ice cubes in glass. Garnish with fresh spearmint and lime twist.
