Welcome Vinho Verde Season!

Welcome Vinho Verde Season!

March 19, 2020 begins the season of Spring and what I like to think of as Vinho Verde Season!  From Portugal, Vinho Verde wines are known as “green wines” with lots of fruity flavors and a tiny bit of effervescence that makes for easy sipping. The region where these grapes are grown is along the Atlantic Coast of Spain known as the “Costa Verde or “Green Coast”.

Here’s why Vinho Verde is the perfect warm weather wine:

  • It is inexpensive and a crowd pleaser. Having a crowd to your lake house this weekend or a family gathering in your backyard? There is a good selection of Vinho Verde wines in the $10 range and at that price everyone will enjoy a glass or two of this refreshing crisp wine on a warm spring day.
  • Refreshing effervescence. Vinho Verde has a bit of fizz which is always fun.
  • White and rosé varieties of Vinho Verde are available.
  • Our local wine shops offer several varieties of Vinho Verde. #support local
  • This bright, crisp wine pairs well with warm weather foods – grilled or fried fish, shrimp and seafood and green salads.
  • Lower in alcohol for easy warm weather sipping. (9  – 12 percent alcohol).

Some of my favorite Vinho Verde wines:

Gatão (Spanish word for cat): Easy to recognize this bottle with a kitty cat on the label. Citrus notes with a touch of pineapple and a nice little bit of effervescence. I recommend this if you like a little sweetness in your wine. $10 range.

Santola: Another easily recognized bottle with a crab on the label. Lively acidity with a bit of fizz, apple and bright citrus flavors. $9 range.

Mapreco ~ white or rosé. “It’s an adult soft drink.” Crisp and dry while showing great fruit quality. A wonderful spritz makes it so refreshing. Goes down so easy that one bottle just won’t do. $10 range.
