Early Years and Education

Harrison Ford was born on July 13, 1942, at the Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. His parents, Dorothy (Nidelman), a former radio actress, and John William “Christopher” Ford, an advertising executive and former actor, were both actors. Terence, who is younger than him, was born in 1945.

Their father was a German-Irish Catholic, and their mother was an Ashkenazi Jew whose parents came from Minsk, Belarus, which was part of the Russian Empire at the time. When asked what religion he and his brother were raised in, Ford joked, “Democrat,” but when asked more seriously, he said, “Liberals of every stripe.” When asked what effect his Jewish and Irish Catholic ancestry might have had on him, he joked, “As a man, I’ve always felt Irish, and as an actor, I’ve always felt Jewish.”

Ford was a Boy Scout, and he earned the Life Scout rank, which is the second-highest one. He was a counselor for the Reptile Study merit badge at Napowan Adventure Base Scout Camp. In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, he and director Steven Spielberg agreed to portray the youthful Indiana Jones as a Life Scout (1989).

Ford graduated from Park Ridge, Illinois’s Maine East High School in 1960. His voice was the first student voice to be heard on the new radio station at his high school, WMTH. During his senior year, he was also the station’s first sportscaster.

He went to Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin, where he studied philosophy and joined a fraternity called Sigma Nu. Ford called himself a “Late Bloomer.” In the last quarter of his senior year, he took a drama class to get over his shyness and became interested in acting.

Where Does Harrison Ford Live?

Harrison paid $1 million for a big house in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles in 1983. In 2012, he sold the 3/4-acre home with a gate for $8.2 million. Harrison and Calista bought a different Brentwood home for $12.6 million in 2011. It has been their main home in LA for a long time. He still owns at least three other homes in LA, according to Property Records. These slightly less expensive homes are either rental properties or homes for family members.

Harrison spent $5.3 million to buy a penthouse in the Flatiron District of New York City in 2001. In 2010, he put this property on the market for $16 million but then took it off the market. The penthouse has 4 bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms and is 5,500 square feet in size.

The penthouse has an elevator, 11 rooms, a gym, an office, a library, and a state-of-the-art kitchen and security system. The flooring is comprised of anigre wood and poured concrete and is heated by radiant energy. The apartment features a private 2,300-square-foot rooftop patio with a wet bar and views of Manhattan and the Hudson River.

In Wyoming, near the town of Jackson, he owns an 800-acre ranch on the Snake River.

Does Harrison Ford Own Private Planes?

Harrison is a well-known aviation fan and pilot. We call him “notorious” because he has been in a few bad situations over the years, like when he crashed his plane onto a LA golf course and when he made a dangerous landing on an Orange County takeoff runway. Harrison owns as many as ten planes and a helicopter.

His most impressive plane is a 2009 Cessna 680 that he bought brand new for $18 million. Harrison keeps his collection of planes and helicopters at the Santa Monica airport, which is about 10 minutes away from his home in Brentwood. In less than 20 minutes, he can take an Uber to the airport, hop on his plane, and fly himself to Wyoming. And this is something he has been known to do quite often!

When he is in Wyoming, he puts his helicopter at the ready to help with fires and other emergencies. In 2000, Harrison helped a lost hiker who had passed out from lack of water. The hiker and his friend, who were wearing a t-shirt and a cowboy hat, didn’t find out until later that their rescue pilot was an A-lister.
