Absinthe Libertine 72 Intense Tasting Notes by Marc Thuillier

Absinthe Libertine 72 is one of the strongest traditional absinthes on the market, but it’s also one of the most popular, thanks to its richness but also its simplicity, which makes it an ideal absinthe for both beginners and enlightened connoisseurs. Marc Thuillier, an enlightened connoisseur, gives us his thoughts:

Color: a pale golden color with green glints.

Aroma before water: very pleasant, slightly “vintage”, caramelized in a way, with a quite strong Anise profile.

Louche: straightforward and milky. The glass shows a good dose of anethole on its sides.

Aroma after water: still very pleasant, but now a kind of freshness comes out of the glass, with fragrances of blossomed herbs.

Taste: very creamy. This Libertine is indeed loaded with anise, both green and star anise, which explains its milky louche. It directly takes control of the mouth, without warning. Then the caramelized note – in fact liquorice – smelt before adding water comes out and brings a gourmet and warm aspect to the drink. In the end come flavors of various herbs including a shy grand wormwood that still knows how to get noticed.

Finish: the palate is of course filled up with anise, but the pleasant liquorice note coats it all. A welcomed pinch of bitterness ends the show.

Conclusion: a powerful absinthe, no doubt, but at the same time not brimful of complexity because it’s primarily anise and liquorice that prevails in mouth. In my own point of view, being an anise lover, I find this naughty libertine quite seductive
