Cher denied temporary conservatorship over 47-year-old son Elijah Blue Allman

A judge has turned down Cher’s request for an emergency court conservatorship to oversee the finances of her adult son, Elijah Blue Allman. Cher, an Oscar- and Grammy-winning artist, expressed concerns about the large payments Allman receives from the trust of his late father, Gregg Allman, citing mental health and substance abuse struggles. Despite Cher’s arguments, Judge Jessica A Uzcategui did not find an immediate need for a conservatorship but is open to considering a more extensive, long-term arrangement at a hearing scheduled for March.

Cher, who attended the hearing remotely, appeared on a large screen but did not actively participate in the proceedings. Allman and his legal team, present in the courtroom, acknowledged his past challenges but emphasized his current positive state, attending meetings, receiving treatment, and reconciling with his estranged wife.

Expressing satisfaction with the court’s decision, Allman’s lawyer stated outside the courthouse that there is ample support for his client, and he is doing well without the need for a temporary conservatorship. Cher’s attorneys contended that the support Allman receives might be misleading, emphasizing that his apparent sobriety and mental health improvements could be deceptive. They raised concerns about his bipolar disorder, past homelessness, and the potential risks associated with substantial financial resources, suggesting access to drugs that could jeopardize his well-being.

Allman and his legal representatives consistently denied the allegations made in Cher’s December petition. Judge Uzcategui had previously indicated her reluctance to establish a conservatorship during a hearing on January 5, delaying the decision until January 30 due to document-sharing issues.

Cher’s legal team clarified that their client wasn’t necessarily seeking direct control over Allman’s finances and would be open to a court-appointed fiduciary managing his financial matters. As of now, there is no immediate response from Cher’s attorneys regarding the judge’s decision. Court conservatorships, notably highlighted by Britney Spears’ case, have faced increased scrutiny, leading to a reevaluation of their implications and necessity.
