Five Facts About Hot Dogs You May Not Have Known

When it comes to food, it’s hard to argue that there’s anything more American than the Hot Dog. Not only are Hot Dogs delicious, they’re easy to eat on the go—and they’re incredibly flexible. Think about all the different types of hot dogs there are. There are so many from the Chicago style hot dog to the Coney Island hot dog.

Considering how many people love hot dogs, looking for a multi unit franchise for sale, such as Hot Dog on a Stick, could be a smart idea. But before you begin considering any multi unit franchise for sale, why not pick up a few fun facts about hot dogs? The following are a few facts about hot dogs that we bet you didn’t know:

1. Nobody Knows Where They Came From

We can assume that as soon as someone figured out how to make sausages, the hot dog was basically born. Because why would you not put a sausage on bread? However, there are a few claims out there. One story claims that two Austro-Hungarian immigrants invented the hot dog in Vienna and took the recipe with them to Chicago for the 1893 World’s Fair. Another story has the hot dog being invented in Frankfurt back in the 15th century.

2. Hot Dogs Are Out of This World

During the Apollo 7 mission, which took place in 1968, astronauts brought hot dogs with them to enjoy while out in space. In fact, their space hot dogs were way more popular than the freeze-dried ice cream, which most astronauts actually didn’t enjoy. They disliked the space ice cream so much that it was removed from the space program relatively quickly.

3. Hot Dogs Can Be Expensive

Hot dogs are known for being both cheap and tasty, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any pricy hot dogs out there. For example, the most expensive hot dog was a cheese bratwurst that was covered in butter, Teriyaki grilled onions, foie gras, Maitake mushrooms, shaved black truffles, Japanese mayo, wagyu beef, and caviar—all on a brioche bun. It was sold for $169.

4. Nobody Loves Hot Dogs More Than Americans

Even though most of the origin stories take place in Europe, hot dogs have become an “American” food. Americans love them so much that they’ve become a staple for certain holidays. For example, Americans eat over 150 million hot dogs on the Fourth of July alone. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, Americans consume an astounding seven billion hot dogs. That’s right, billion. The average American ends up eating roughly 50 hot dogs a year. That’s almost a hot dog every week! They spent nearly $2.5 billion on hot dogs in 2015. Hot dogs may not have been invented in the U.S., but there’s no one that loves them more than Americans.

5. Hot Dog Eating Competitions Are Insane

Odds are you’re familiar with the famous hot dog eating contest, and odds are you think the people who compete are as nuts as we think they are. The world record was broken in 2015 when a hot dog eating competitor managed to devour 62 hot dogs within ten minutes.

If you enjoy hot dogs in any capacity, then we bet that you got a kick out of some of these fun facts about hot dogs that you probably didn’t know.
