Have You Read the Latest News About Your Tap Water?

If you’re like a lot of people, you may be drinking tap water on a regular basis – after all, it’s convenient and readily available. However, you may not be aware of some of health implications of drinking tap water and this issue was recently highlighted in the news. So, what exactly does this health warning mean for you?

Australians warned about Lead in tapware

There has been a recent health warning in the news due to potential lead poisoning from tapware. Lead is commonly used in plumbing products such as brass fitting and copper pipes and Australia allows much higher levels of lead in brass fittings compared to countries such as the US and Canada. The World Health Organisation has stated that no level of Lead Exposure is safe. Over time, the lead in the fittings and tapware can dissolve into the water and lead to health issues. Babies who drink formula are one of the groups with the highest potential exposure to lead-contaminated water because of their high water intake. Symptoms of lead exposure can include headache, muscle pain, abdominal pain, anaemia, nausea and vomiting.

The Environmental Health Standing Committee have issued this warning and Australians have been advised to run their water for at least 30 seconds each morning. If the taps haven’t been used for long periods, like after a holiday, the water should be run for two to three minutes. Additionally, people have been advised to avoid the hot water taps altogether for drinking and cooking water. This alert was issues in July but the information wasn’t publicised until recently. The current Australian standards for lead exposure are currently being reviewed by regulators to bring them in line with other countries.

Choose fresh, natural Spring water

The new health warning about the risk of lead exposure from tapware is unsurprisingly a serious concern for a lot of Australians. If you want to reduce you and your family’s contact with potential lead exposure, spring water is the perfect alternative. Spring water comes from natural underground springs and is naturally filtered through layers of sand and rock. It’s also rich in trace minerals and is safe for everyone. Best of all, it tastes great! You can easily have access to spring water throughout the day when you choose the right cooler to fit your home or office – you can also choose options with hot or cold water functions for the ultimate in convenience.
