Top 6 Signs That You’re Dehydrated

With the weather warming up in Australia, it’s important that you’re aware of your water intake during the day. If you’re waiting until you’re parched before heading over to your water cooler dispenser, chances are you’re already dehydrated. Let’s take a look at some of the top signs that you may be dehydrated so you can reach for some water sooner rather than later!

1. Thirst

Yes, this is an obvious one but a lot of people feel thirsty but then wait until it gets worse before they have a drink. When you feel thirsty your body is trying to tell your something so take a break and have a drink of water!

2. Muscle cramps

Although muscle cramps can have a number of causes, dehydration can cause cramping if you’re working out in the hot weather. If you’re prone to cramping up during exercise, make sure you stay hydrated and see if it helps.

3. Headache

A lot of people experience headaches when they’re dehydrated and it can be one of earliest signs that your body needs water. If you get a headache, have some water before you reach for the painkillers.

4. Dry mouth

A dry mouth is one of the main symptoms of dehydration and it means that your body doesn’t have enough fluid to produce saliva. This causes your saliva to thicken and your mouth to feel dry.

5. Dizziness

You may be surprised to hear that even if you’re mildly dehydrated, you can begin to feel dizzy. This is because dehydration can cause blood pressure to drop, which can mean you can get pretty lightheaded. Although it can strike at any time, it’s often an issue on very hot days or when exercising.

6. Drowsiness

If you suddenly find yourself feeling lethargic, it could be due to mild dehydration as your blood pressure drops and blood flow to the brain slows down. If you suddenly feel drowsy, take a break and drink some water to see if that perks you up.

These are the signs of mild to moderate dehydration – if you let it go further and start to experience severe dehydration, you can expect more severe symptoms such as rapid heartbeat and breathing, low blood pressure, fever, and confusion. If you have natural spring water available with your home or office water cooler, hopefully you’ll never get to this stage!
