The Rise of the Pinoy: 7 Powerful Lessons of Success from 21 World-Class Filipinos by Mike Grogan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Mike Grogan's The Rise of the Pinoy is a highly motivational book that could elicit positive responses from its readers. The author enlightens the mindset of the Pinoys on how to fulfil his/her full potential with clear call-to-action instructions detailed on the book. Key inspirations and powerful messages from 21 great Pinoys interviewed on the book are very inspiring and of great sources of encouragement on how Pinoys can bring out the best in themselves. A must read for young and old ones who aspires for a positive change in their lives.

That's my published review on Goodreads. Let me tell you more about it.

Reading the Book is a happy and humbling find for me. I would like to think that there really is no coincidence. And this book is written for me. I'm a little exaggerating here but that would be how mostly of the Pinoy readers would feel after giving this book a try.

In all honesty, I don't have high expectations on this book at first.

I tried to read the title several times without any bell reverberating on me because maybe I'm just like many of the Pinoys who are dwelling on the safe 'mediocre' side and have defined success as a huge next-to-impossible status. But having committed myself to do an advance reading for a book review for Mike (yeah, like we're close. Haha!) I have a hurried Sunday to do everything listed on my agenda so I could start on my reading activity.

On my first few pages, I felt I made a mistake of promising to review the book. Ugh!

I actually have real doubts that I could finish a chapter. Not that because it's boring which we often associate with books selling ideas. In fact, it's an easy read. You won't find it hard to relate on him. But just because I have lesser than a bird's span of attention lately. There's too many personal issues clouding my horizon.

As I flip through pages of its digital copy, Mike's stories began to sink through my emotions. It caught my feelings, that feeling wherein you are moved to become better at least if not at all excellent.

I'm suddenly all ears as if he is talking in front of me. Then I took down notes and not just notes but I actually answered the exercises on his book!

I felt the pain in working hard towards my goals but it is as if nothing is happening. I felt the frustrations of having low support if not downright discouragement for me to do what I love. When I read his book, these uncertainties and road blocks which I haven't identified yet on my own were verbalized.

A good two chapters of the book discusses anyone's greatest enemy and how to deal with it and embracing one's pain. Key messages of 21 great Pinoys that Mike interviewed on the book are spot on sources of encouragements. The exercises and lessons learned on each chapter are relevant and thought-provoking that could enlighten the mindset of its readers to fulfil his/her full potential.

I'm definitely re-reading it. I felt grateful to Mike for his insightful and inspiring work.  And to the organizers of his book launching for choosing me as one of the first few people who could have an advance reading of his book's early version.

Definitely the book has profound impact.

If you are looking for ways on how to make a positive change in your life, this book is highly recommended motivational tool. It isn't about being an entrepreneur or how to make lots of money, but more importantly, the book is about how you become a better version of yourself which is what success is about according to the author.

This coming weekend, catch Mike Grogan on his book launching at High Street on June 11 at 6-8pm, Greenhills San Juan on June 12 at 10-12NN and Alabang Town Center on June 12, 4-6pm.
